The Testimony (Italian:Il testimone) is 1946 Italian crime film directed by Pietro Germi and starring Roldano Lupi, Marina Berti and Ernesto Almirante. The film was made at the Cines Studios in Rome. It is one of several films regarded as an antecedent of the later giallo thrillers.

Synopsis

Suspecté de meurtre, Pietro Scotti, un honnête citoyen, risque la peine de mort en raison d'un témoin à charge de dernière minute. Ce dernier, Giuseppe Marchi, un vieil employé de bureau, raconte qu'il l'a vu près du cadavre sur les lieux du crime. Mais il s'avère que sa montre retardait et annule donc son témoignage. Pietro bénéficie d'un non-lieu. Essayant de refaire sa vie, il demande en mariage une jeune fille pauvre, Linda. Mais leur couple est perturbé par Giuseppe, qui semble suivre Pietro...

A disguised bandit steals valuable jewellery from Commendatore Anzaloni's apartment and flees, leaving Anzaloni unharmed. Inspector Ingravallo investigates and finds that the robbery is suspicious in that the robber was able to find valuables too quickly. A neighbour, Liliana Banducci, employs a servant girl, Assuntina. Her fiancé, Diomede, tries to escape when he sees police tailing Assuntina. But Diomede has an alibi. Liliana's cousin, Dr. Valdarena, pays her a visit, only to find her corpse on the floor. But before calling police, Valdarena removes an envelope addressed to him from the sideboard. Liliana's husband Remo was away from Rome at the time of the murder, but he is very surprised to hear that Liliana had changed her will only one week earlier.
