Although the Spanish language title refers to (fishing) nets, the English language title is The Wave (apparently referring to imagery at the end of the film). Redes was made with a mainly non-professional cast and has been seen as anticipating Italian neorealism. It concerns the struggle of poor fishermen to overcome exploitation.
Synopsis
La rude existence des pêcheurs d'Alvarado, une petite commune située sur la côte atlantique du Mexique. L'un d'eux, Miro, enterre son fils qu'il n'a pu soigner. Même lorsque poisson abonde, les salaires versés aux pêcheurs demeurent extrêmement bas. Révolté, Miro incite ses compagnons à entamer une grève de protestation.Comments

Four peasant families working farms for the same landlord scrape out a meager existence in 1898 in the campaign around Bergamo. Over the course of a year, children are born, crops are planted, animals are slaughtered, couples are married, stories and prayers are exchanged in the families's shared farmhouse. Undercurrents of revolution are seen by the peasants but largely ignored, as a communist rabble-rouser gives a speech at a local fair and when a newlywed couple visit the big city of Milan and witness the arrest of political prisoners. When spring comes, one of the four families is forced off their land by the incensed landlord, and the remaining families watch them go, praying for them and recognizing their own fragile existence.

En 1980, un journaliste allemand travaille au Japon pour une chaîne de télévision allemande. Au mois de mai de la même année a lieu, en Corée du Sud, le soulèvement de Gwangju. Ce mouvement, principalement étudiant et syndical, s’oppose à la dictature de Chun Doo-hwan, mise en place après l’assassinat de Park Chung-hee. Il décide alors de se rendre dans le pays. Il prend un taxi de Séoul à Gwangju et filme tout ce qu’il voit. Son retour jusqu'à Séoul sera éminemment compliqué puisqu'il leur faut échapper à la surveillance aérienne. De retour au Japon, il envoie son film en Allemagne.

Set in the rural West Country in Victorian England, the story features Bathsheba Everdene (Julie Christie), a beautiful, headstrong, independently minded woman who inherits her uncle's farm and decides to manage it herself. This engenders some disapproval from the local farming community. She employs a former neighbour, Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates), to be her shepherd; rejected by her as a suitor, Gabriel lost his own flock of sheep when one of his dogs drove them over a steep cliff. Although she grew up in Lebanon, wealthy Lebanese Muslim Zeina Nasrueddi (Nada Abu Farhat) has been living in Dubai with her architect husband and son, Karim. Marital difficulties led her to send her son to spend the summer with her sister Maha in Lebanon. When the 2006 Lebanon War began she traveled to Beirut via Turkey. In order to find her son, she hires Lebanese Christian taxi driver Tony (Georges Khabbaz) to drive her to Southern Lebanon. The O'Leary family are travelling to Chicago to start a new life when Patrick O'Leary tries to race a steam train in his wagon. He is killed when his horses bolt. His wife Molly and their three boys are left to survive on their own. In town she agrees to prove her skills as a laundress when a woman's dress is accidentally spattered with mud. She quickly proves herself and builds up a laundry business in an area known as "the Patch". Her sons are educated. One, Jack, becomes a reforming lawyer, but another, Dion, is involved in gambling. While washing a sheet, Mrs O'Leary discovers a drawing, apparently created by Gil Warren, a devious local businessman. Her sons realise that it reveals that he has a plan to run a tramline along a street that he and his cronies intend to buy up cheaply.

Born on the day of the death of renowned composer Giuseppe Verdi—27 January 1901—Alfredo Berlinghieri and Olmo Dalcò come from opposite ends of the social spectrum.
