Synopsis
Nancy Lee, issue d'une famille pauvre mais aristocratique de Virginie, rejette la demande en mariage d'Anthony Weir, ses parents lui reprochant son statut social. Au lieu de cela, elle épouse le riche New-Yorkais George Trevor, un ivrogne, qui meurt, laissant Nancy sans le sou. Nancy emprunte une grosse somme d'argent au neveu d'Anthony, Douglas, qui est amoureux d'elle. Douglas a en fait détourné l'argent, et lorsqu'il est incapable de le rembourser, Anthony, de retour d'un voyage à l'étranger, accuse Nancy d'avoir "saigné" son neveu et demande à Nancy de rembourser l'argent. Lorsque Nancy vend ses bijoux et ses fourrures, Anthony est convaincu de sa vraie valeur et ils se marient.Actors

The film focuses on various guests staying at New York City's famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Among them are lonely screen star Irene Malvern, in town with her maid Anna for a childhood friend's wedding and the premiere of her latest movie; war correspondent Chip Collyer, mistaken for a jewel thief by Irene but playing along to catch her attention; flyer Capt. James Hollis, wounded in World War II and facing perilous surgery in three days; wealthy shyster Martin X. Edley, who is trying to sign the Bey of Aribajan to a shady oil deal; Oliver Webson, a cub reporter for Collier's Weekly hoping to expose Edley; and bride-to-be Cynthia Drew, whose upcoming wedding is endangered by her belief her fiancé Bob is in love with Irene Malvern. Also on the scene are Bunny Smith, the hotel's stenographer/notary public, who hopes to escape her low income roots by marrying Edley, and reporter Randy Morton, who loiters in the lobby hoping to stumble upon a scoop for his newspaper.

Mary Howard (Joan Crawford) is a novelist with advanced ideas about love and marriage, and is in love with her publisher, Rogers Woodruff (Herbert Marshall). She decides the only logical thing to do is to lure him away from his wife and marry him. Mary's friend, Jimmy (Robert Taylor), however, is convinced he's the right man for her and pursues her. He sees through her rationalizations and wrong-thinking and decides to throw Mary and Woodruff's wife Claire (Greer Garson) together at the house of a friend (Spring Byington). The two women do not know each other, but during their chats Mary appreciates and respects Claire's maturity and wisdom. When Mary learns Woodruff is a philandering womanizer of long standing, she realizes she cannot love him and welcomes Jimmy's attentions.
