Camille Baker (Pascale Bussières) is a university literature professor at a religious college in a long-term relationship with fellow professor Martin (Henry Czerny). When her dog runs away and she finds him dead on the street she ends up crying in the middle of the laundry mat where she is approached by Petra (Rachael Crawford), who comforts her. Later on Camille realizes that her laundry was mixed up with Petra's and finds a business card inside the laundry bag. Going to return Petra's clothes she finds that Petra is a circus performer and when she goes to Petra's trailer to retrieve her clothes Petra tells her that she would like to sleep with her. Confused and uncomfortable Camille grabs her clothes and leaves. Petra later tracks Camille down and shoots an arrow through her window with a picture of herself and her phone number attached. In 1937, Republican Militia force a circus troupe to fight on their side in the Spanish Civil War. The Funny Clown (Santiago Segura) slaughters dozens of Nationalist troops, armed only with a machete, before being shot and disarmed. While his fellow troupe members are executed, the Funny Clown is sentenced to work as a slave laborer, at the monument of the Valle de los Caídos. His son, Javier (Sasha Di Bendetto) tries to free him by setting off dynamite where he was working. But Colonel Salcedo (Sancho Gracia) tramples the Funny Clown to death with his horse. En 1897, un homme noir du nom de Kananga, ancien fils d'esclave de Cuba, joue un petit rôle de cannibale dans le modeste cirque Delvaux. Le clown blanc George Foottit, sommé de renouveler ses numéros par le directeur du cirque, a l'idée de s'associer avec Kananga dans un duo de clown blanc autoritaire et de clown noir souffre-douleur, qui prendra le nom de Chocolat. Le duo comique est très bien accueilli par le public et Delvaux commence à faire des affaires. La rumeur du succès se répand en France au point que Joseph Oller, directeur du Nouveau Cirque, convainc Foottit et Chocolat de prendre du service dans son établissement parisien. Le succès dans la capitale est immédiat, et Chocolat devient le premier artiste noir de la scène française. Grisé par l'argent, il s'adonne au jeu et se laisse aller aux plaisirs des femmes.
