Synopsis
Son père ruiné étant devenu voleur, Rhoda accepte à contrecœur de voler le tronc des pauvres d'une église. Pendant ce cambriolage, son père est atteint par une balle et meurt dans les bras du prêtre en lui demandant l'absolution, sous les yeux de l'homme qui l'a ruiné. Pour se repentir, cet homme charge Rhoda de rendre l'argent mal acquis à ceux qu'il a volés. Rhoda se retrouve ainsi affublée du surnom de "White Moll". Après un certain nombre d'aventures, elle fait arrêter "The Dangler", le chef d'une bande d'escrocs, sauve plusieurs personnes de la mort et gagne le cœur de "The Pug".Actors

Mary Vantyne et son mari Andrew sont invités chez une vieille amie de Mary, Isabelle Lenwright, qui contrairement à Mary a épousé un homme riche. Lorsque Mary entend certains invités se moquer de son apparence, elle décide d'avoir une nouvelle garde-robe, et bientôt tout le monde est étonné par Mary et ses belles robes. Ces changements font qu'elle est admirée par Fred Lenwright, le fils de son amie, mais aussi par le peu scrupuleux millionnaire Ralph Blake. Face à des factures de plus en plus élevées, Mary se trouve dans une position compromettante jusqu'à ce que Blake lui montre un reçu attestant le paiement de ces factures. De plus, Lenwright engage un détective pour enquêter sur le vol de 3 000 $, dont Fred se trouve accusé. Puis Andrew découvre les factures payées par Blake, et ce dernier prétend que Fred a volé cet argent pour payer les factures de Mary. Mais Mary confesse que c'est elle qui a pris cet argent pour payer ses nouveaux habits.

Impecunious bookmaker's clerk Arnold Grierson, seeing a way to easy money, forces his daughter Margaret to marry wealthy but obnoxious songwriter Nevern, ignoring her romance with local newspaper editor Michael Hardwick. Soon after the wedding, Grierson requests the loan of a significant sum of money from Nevern and is furious and humiliated to be flatly turned down. He begins to make elaborate plans to murder Nevern on the assumption that Margaret will then inherit her husband's estate. Meanwhile the desperately unhappy Margaret has rekindled her relationship with Hardwick. Nevern finds them in a café together and causes a public scene. In 1941, Barton Fink's first Broadway play, Bare Ruined Choirs, has achieved critical and popular success. His agent informs him that Capitol Pictures in Hollywood has offered him a thousand dollars per week to write film scripts. Barton hesitates, worried that moving to California would separate him from "the common man", his focus as a writer. He accepts the offer, however, and checks into the Hotel Earle, a large and unusually deserted building. His room is sparse and draped in subdued colors; its only decoration is a small painting of a woman on the beach, arm raised to block the sun.

William Lee is an exterminator who finds that his wife Joan is stealing his insecticide (pyrethrum) to use as a drug. When Lee is arrested by the police, he begins hallucinating because of "bug powder" exposure. He believes he is a secret agent with two handlers or controllers in the forms of a talking insectoid typewriter and an alien "Mugwump". The bug assigns him the mission of killing Joan. She is allegedly an agent of an organization called Interzone Incorporated. Lee dismisses the bug and its instructions and kills it. He returns home to find Joan having sex with Hank, one of his writer friends. Shortly afterwards, he accidentally kills her while attempting to shoot a drinking glass off her head in imitation of William Tell.

In 1954, a military train guarded by American soldiers and Japanese police is attacked as it travels between Kyoto and Tokyo. During the raid, which is carried out with great precision, an American sergeant is killed, and the train's cargo of guns and ammunition is stolen. The crime is investigated by Capt. Hanson, an American, and Japanese police inspector Kita, who, five weeks later, are concerned when a thief named Webber is shot with some of the stolen bullets. As Webber lies dying in a Tokyo hospital, he is questioned by Hanson and Kita, and although Webber was left for dead by his gang during a thwarted robbery, he refuses to implicate his cohorts, who presumably are responsible for the earlier crime. Webber, who is also an American, does reveal, however, that he is secretly married to a Japanese woman named Mariko.
