Jerry Larrabee (Richard Barthelmess) is framed by rival gangster Spadoni (Louis Natheaux) and sent to prison, where he is befriended by a kind and understanding warden (William Holden). Through the warden's patient influence, Jerry becomes interested in music and forms a prison band, broadcasting over the radio. Jerry's singing deeply moves his radio listeners and soon Jerry is given a pardon by the governor.

When Richard Barthelmess goes off to study for four years at a university in Mexico, his home in California is a part of Mexico. By the time he returns (around the year 1850), however, California has been overrun by Americans. Barthelmess finds his family living in fear of unscrupulous Americans and he finds the family estate is in shambles. Although the land deeds granted by the Spanish throne are supposed to be recognized by the United States government as proof of ownership, some crooked California land commissioners are attempting to rook the old owners. Barthelmess becomes embroiled in an argument with a federal official. He has brought 3000 head of cattle from his uncle to deliver to this official, played by Fred Kohler. Barthelmess flirts with a girl that Kohler considers to be his girlfriend and this leads the official to try up Barthelmess and lash him across the face. Barthelmess is eventually saved from further assault by the sheriff, played by James Rennie.

Russian prince (Antonio Moreno), upon returning from the front, sees his wife (Billie Dove) in the company of a blackguard count. Seven young English aviators are billeted at the Berthelot farm near the French front. One of the flyers, Philip Blythe, falls in love with farmer Berthelot's daughter, Jeannie, and on the morning before a dangerous mission declares his love for her. Philip is shot down, and Jeannie helps an ambulance crew to extricate his apparently lifeless body from the wrecked plane. In the following weeks, Jeannie searches in vain in all of the military army hospitals for Philip. She does encounter Philip's father, who, disapproving of her lowly origins, falsely informs her that Philip has died. In farewell, Jeannie sends a bouquet of lilacs to his room, and Philip, recognizing the flowers as her gift, painfully drags himself to his window in time to call her back to him.
