It is based on Leonhard Frank's novella "Karl und Anna" and tells the story of two friends in a POW camp during World War I. One of them escapes and forms a relationship with the other man's wife. After the war her husband returns. The film was entered into the 35th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear.
It is a remake of Homecoming (1928).
Synopsis
En 1918, Karl et Richard sont prisonniers de guerre en Russie. Pour supporter leur souffrance quotidienne ils rêvent de chez eux : Richard parle tant de sa femme Anna qu’elle devient l’objet des fantasmes de Karl. Celui-ci parvient à s’échapper et, n’ayant personne qui l’attend en Allemagne, il retrouve Anna et se fait passer pour Richard. Si Anna sait que Karl n’est pas son mari, elle accueille l’étranger, sa tendresse, son amour. Les deux amants croient Richard mort et, quelque part, espèrent qu’il en est ainsi.Actors

During World War II, U.S. Army intelligence officer First Lieutenant Thomas Hart (Farrell) is captured by German forces. While interrogating Hart, the Germans coerce him to divulge intelligence by taking away his boots, causing his feet to become frostbitten and badly injured, and leaving him, naked, in a very cold cell. He is then transferred by train to Stalag VI-A prisoner of war camp at Hemer, Germany. While en route, a P-51 Mustang attacks (the letters POW were painted on the top of the train, but got covered by thick snow). To save themselves, the POWs leave the train and spell P-O-W with their bodies and prevent further strafing.

During the Japanese invasion of Burma in 1942, a seven-strong British sonic warfare (sonic deception) patrol takes refuge in a dilapidated hut at an abandoned tin mine in the Burmese jungle. Tension rises as they lose radio contact with their command force but learn the Japanese are nearby. The plot thickens when a lone Japanese scout stumbles across the hut, and his fate becomes the squad's second dilemma. Sergeant Mitchem, the man in command of the patrol, wants to take the prisoner back to headquarters for interrogation. But as the men argue the prisoner's destiny, tempers flare. Sergeant Mitchem clashes with his contemptuous second-in-command Corporal Johnstone and struggles to maintain discipline among his mutinous charges. The chief culprit is the gruff Private Bamforth, a man who dislikes both authority and the army but gradually becomes the conscience of the detachment.

The film begins with a new trainload of Polish Jews arriving for processing at Sobibor. The German Commandant gives them a welcoming speech, assuring the new arrivals that the place is a work camp. Other SS officers move along the assembled lines of prisoners, selecting a small number who have trade skills (such as goldsmiths, seamstresses, shoemakers, and tailors). The remaining prisoners are sent away to a different part of the camp from which a pillar of smoke rises day and night. It is some time before the new prisoners realize Sobibor is a death camp, all of the other Jews are exterminated in gas chambers, and their corpses are cremated in large ovens. The small number of prisoners who are kept alive in the other part of the camp are charged with sorting the belongings taken from those who are murdered and then repairing the shoes, recycling the clothing, and melting down any silver or gold to make jewelry for the SS officers. Despite their usefulness, these surviving prisoners' existence is precarious, and beatings and executions can occur at any time.

Trois marins allemands naufragés, le lieutenant Düren, l'enseigne Stahmer et le Maat Hinze, sont sauvés par un sous-marin allemand. Après s'être avérés être les seuls survivants du naufrage du navire de guerre Pommern, ils sont d'abord célébrés en tant que héros et décorés. Cependant un enquêteur note des incohérences dans les rapports des trois et suppose la possibilité qu'ils ont délibérément quitté le navire par intérêt personnel. En raison de cette union personnelle, eux et l'avocat de la défense des trois hommes, inexpérimenté en matière de juridiction militaire, n'obtiennent pas le rejet du procès qu'ils considèrent à charge dans le sens de la dénazification. Au début, les trois affirment leur innocence, mais à mesure qu’ils deviennent de plus en plus incohérents, ils concèdent un à un qu'ils ont quitté le navire prématurément. Ils affirment, en partie fortement émus, que tous leurs camarades étaient morts, rester sur le navire n’aurait entraîné qu'une mort inutile sans bénéfice pour autrui. Tous les trois sont condamnés à mort.
