Synopsis
L'Archiduc Alexander, un débauché, tombe amoureux de Judith Peredy, la sœur du docteur qui exerce dans le village hongrois près duquel Alexandre a un relais de chasse. Bien que Judith aime Alexander, elle l'éconduit, car son frère Eugene l'a mise en garde. N'étant pas quelqu'un à accepter facilement un refus, l'archiduc se rend dans la chambre de Judith en profitant d'une absence d'Eugene et la brutalise. Eugene arrive alors et n'est sauvé de l'épée de l'archiduc que parce que Judith tire sur l'homme qu'elle aime. Judith et Eugene sont emprisonnés à Budapest sur ordre du père d'Alexander, qui ne veut pas que son fil se marie en dessous de sa condition. Judith, sure de son amour pour Alexander, convainc les parents de celui-ci de sa sincérité et par dispense spéciale le mariage est accepté.Actors

Franz Pless, fils d'un paysan hongrois, part à New York pour devenir architecte, et y rencontre Sari, Comtesse Thurzo, qu'il avait connue quand ils étaient enfants. Une romance se développe entre eux mais Sari doit retourner en Hongrie avec son père. Franz la suit en Europe, mais apprend avec consternation qu'il doit faire son service militaire obligatoire de trois ans. En permission pour rendre visite à son grand-père, il se querelle avec le Baron von Heimberg, capitaine de son régiment. Lors de rencontres en secret, Sari promet à Franz de l'attendre, mais, lors d'un banquet son père annonce ses fiançailles avec Heimberg sans l'avoir prévenue. Franz se bat avec le capitaine, Sari le cache mais il est découvert. On lui offre la liberté à condition qu'il quitte le pays. Ilona, la maîtresse du capitaine, emprunte la robe de mariée de Sali pendant que celle-ci est avec Franz et force le capitaine à sa marier avec elle.

Le soir du 1er août, le commandant Corlaix, de la Marine française, organise un dîner avec les officiers de son croiseur et sa femme Yvonne. Après le repas, le Lieutenant D'Artelle demande à Yvonne de rester à bord avec lui, et quand Corlaix demande à sa femme de quitter le navire (car il a appris par radio que la guerre a été déclarée), elle se rend dans la cabine de D'Artelle. Plus tard, le croiseur est coulé par une torpille et Corlaix passe en cour martiale pour incompétence. Yvonne vient témoigner et en se compromettant prouve que son mari avait fait son devoir. After many years in exile, Don Juan returns to Seville in secret. His wife has threatened to have him thrown in prison. Next morning he is surprised to find that all the town knows he is back (not surprising really as he had a big sword fight on arrival). Rodrigo, an admirer of his, follows Don Juan everywhere, wanting to be just like him, and able to give a good impression of him. Don Juan prepares to flee to France but Rodrigo is killed by a jealous husband who believes he is Don Juan and all Seville now believes him dead. He attends his own magnificent funeral, but finds many discomforts now while pretending that Don Juan is dead, before finally sorting things out.

The film begins 20 years into King Henry's reign. In May 1536, immediately following the execution of his second wife, Anne Boleyn (Merle Oberon), King Henry VIII (Charles Laughton) marries Jane Seymour (Wendy Barrie), who dies in childbirth eighteen months later. He then weds a German princess, Anne of Cleves (played by Laughton's real-life wife Elsa Lanchester). This marriage ends in divorce when Anne deliberately makes herself unattractive so she can be free to marry her sweetheart. (In an imaginative and high-spirited scene, Anne "wins her freedom" from Henry in a game of cards on their wedding night). After this divorce, Henry marries the beautiful and ambitious Lady Katherine Howard (Binnie Barnes). She has rejected love all her life in favour of ambition, but after her marriage, she finally falls in love with Henry's handsome courtier Thomas Culpeper (Robert Donat) who has attempted to woo her in the past. Their liaison is discovered by Henry's court and the couple gets executed. The weak and ageing Henry consoles himself with a final marriage to Catherine Parr (Everley Gregg) who proves domineering. In the final scene, while Parr is no longer in the room, the king breaks the fourth wall, saying "Six wives, and the best of them's the worst.

The film takes place mostly in the waterfront bar of César, Marius's father. Marius works in the bar and his good friend since childhood, Fanny, works outside the bar selling cockles. Marius has a hidden desire to travel to exotic places with the ship crews that depart from the docks of Marseilles. This desire becomes exposed when a rich older man (Panisse) proposes to Fanny and Marius gets jealous. Marius' jealousy of Panisse is the first indication of the secret feelings that he has for her, but much to his surprise, the feelings are reciprocated by Fanny. She confesses that she loves Marius prompting him to reveal his plans of traveling the world to her, noting that being the wife of a man at sea is not a desirable life. After a few nights, it is discovered that they have slept together and Marius's father and Fanny's mother convince him to marry her. Marius becomes noticeably melancholy after proposing to Fanny until a few days later, the date of departure of a boat on which Marius was supposed to crew. Fanny, realizing that Marius is not truly happy being with her, decides to encourage him to leave. She helps distract his father while Marius sneaks onto the boat.
