Synopsis
Un jour, une cavalière de cirque, rencontre le comte von Wallenberg et tous deux tombent amoureux l'un de l'autre. Quand il devient majeur, Egon lui demande sa main. Elle accepte sa demande et les deux se marient. La cavalière de cirque enjouée et à l'esprit libre, embarrassée par aucune parole ouverte, est bientôt une épine dans le pied de sa belle-mère attachée aux valeurs de noblesse. Camille Baker (Pascale Bussières) is a university literature professor at a religious college in a long-term relationship with fellow professor Martin (Henry Czerny). When her dog runs away and she finds him dead on the street she ends up crying in the middle of the laundry mat where she is approached by Petra (Rachael Crawford), who comforts her. Later on Camille realizes that her laundry was mixed up with Petra's and finds a business card inside the laundry bag. Going to return Petra's clothes she finds that Petra is a circus performer and when she goes to Petra's trailer to retrieve her clothes Petra tells her that she would like to sleep with her. Confused and uncomfortable Camille grabs her clothes and leaves. Petra later tracks Camille down and shoots an arrow through her window with a picture of herself and her phone number attached. Camille invites Petra inside and ends up kissing her before running away.

En 1897, un homme noir du nom de Kananga, ancien fils d'esclave de Cuba, joue un petit rôle de cannibale dans le modeste cirque Delvaux. Le clown blanc George Foottit, sommé de renouveler ses numéros par le directeur du cirque, a l'idée de s'associer avec Kananga dans un duo de clown blanc autoritaire et de clown noir souffre-douleur, qui prendra le nom de Chocolat. Le duo comique est très bien accueilli par le public et Delvaux commence à faire des affaires. La rumeur du succès se répand en France au point que Joseph Oller, directeur du Nouveau Cirque, convainc Foottit et Chocolat de prendre du service dans son établissement parisien. Le succès dans la capitale est immédiat, et Chocolat devient le premier artiste noir de la scène française. Grisé par l'argent, il s'adonne au jeu et se laisse aller aux plaisirs des femmes.

In 1937, Republican Militia force a circus troupe to fight on their side in the Spanish Civil War. The Funny Clown (Santiago Segura) slaughters dozens of Nationalist troops, armed only with a machete, before being shot and disarmed. While his fellow troupe members are executed, the Funny Clown is sentenced to work as a slave laborer, at the monument of the Valle de los Caídos. His son, Javier (Sasha Di Bendetto) tries to free him by setting off dynamite where he was working. But Colonel Salcedo (Sancho Gracia) tramples the Funny Clown to death with his horse. Javier knocks him down, gouging out his eye in the process. Salcedo vows to remember Javier for this insult.

Because she married a circus performer, Judge Foster (Erville Alderson) casts out his only daughter. Just before her death a few years later, she leaves her little girl Sally (Carol Dempster) in the care of her friend McGargle (W.C. Fields), a good-natured crook, juggler and fakir. Sally grows up in this atmosphere and is unaware of her parentage. McGargle, realizing his responsibility to the child, gets a job with a carnival company playing at Great Meadows, where the Fosters live. A real estate boom has made them wealthy. Sally is a hit with her dancing. Peyton (Alfred Lunt), the son of Judge Foster's friend, falls in love with Sally. To save him, the Judge arranges to have McGargle and Sally arrested. McGargle escapes, but Sally is hunted down and brought back. McGargle, hearing of Sally's plight, steals a Flivver, and after many delays, reaches the courtroom and presents proof of Sally's parentage. The Judge dismisses the case and his wife takes Sally in her arms, but Peyton's claim is stronger and she agrees to become his wife. McGargle is persuaded to remain and is found an outlet for his peculiar talents in selling real estate.
