Uncivilised is a 1936 Australian film directed by Charles Chauvel. It was an attempt by Chauvel to make a more obviously commercial film, and was clearly influenced by Tarzan.

The film is known as Uncivilized in the USA.

Synopsis

Successful author Beatrice Lynn is commissioned by her publisher to go to the Outback and locate the legendary white man, Mala, who heads an aboriginal tribe. Travelling by camel, she is abducted by an Afghan, Akbar Jhan and his group of aboriginals who provide pituri, a narcotic to aboriginals. Previously not allowed into Mala's tribal land to sell his wares, Akbar Jhan has schemed to use Beatrice, a white woman to arouse Mala's interest.

In colonial Australia, James Morrison is a young teamster who has two friends, Long and Short. He is betrothed to Jane Judd when he visits Sydney and meets fiery Irish girl Biddy O'Shea, who is just off the "wife ship" – a boatload of women from an Irish orphanage bought out to Australia. James is attracted to Biddy and promises to marry her. James returns to Bathurst to break the news to Jane, but his mother dies and makes James promise to marry her daughter. He feels obliged to honour his old commitment to Jane.

Jedda is an Aboriginal girl born on a cattle station in the Northern Territory of Australia.
