The entire film shoot was at Golden Rock, Tiruchirappalli. The film opens with two friends "Pattai"Murugan (Sivakarthikeyan) and "Theni"Kesavan (Vimal) who are unemployed and want to become a politician. Meanwile,Murugan meets Paappaa (Regina Cassandra) and falls for her. On the other side Kesavan meets Mithra Meenalochini (Bindu Madhavi) and falls for her. Rahul Mithaiwala (Shahrukh Khan) is a forty-year-old bachelor living in Mumbai. His parents died in a car accident when he was eight years old, so his grandparents raised him. His grandfather (Lekh Tandon) owns a chain of confectionery shops where Rahul has been a dedicated worker helping his grandfather. Two of Rahul's friends convince to finally take a vacation and travel with them to Goa. Rahul's grandfather dies on the day of the 100th birthday celebration. His grandmother tells Rahul that his grandfather wanted his ashes to be divided into two parts—one of each to be immersed in the Ganges and Rameswaram. This story begins with Chinna Vandu's (Dhanush) brothers Paranjothi and Paranthavan (Sriman and Sathyan) who are not yet married, despite their old age. Chinna Vandu, who studied in his uncle's son home, falls in love with Vanaroja (Nazriya Nazim) who comes there to visit her Grandma (Sachu) and see the village festival. John (Arya) and Regina (Nayantara) marry reluctantly at a church. They have agreed to the marriage just to make their parents happy. When they take their wedding vows Regina utters her lover's name, "Surya". Upon hearing this, Regina's father (Sathyaraj) faints in the church. Regina feels sorry for her father and ends up marrying John. They live in an apartment together, and John comes home every night drunk deliberately to disturb Regina.
