Rosemarie Lemon (Amy Irving) is a young deaf woman and teacher of deaf children whose dream of becoming a dancer is not supported by her mother (Viveca Lindfors). Drew Rothman (Michael Ontkean) is a truck driver working for the family business whose ambition to become a singer is ridiculed by his brother (Barry Miller) and father (Alex Rocco), who all live with the grandfather (Herbert Berghof) in an apartment in Hoboken, New Jersey. Drew becomes fascinated with Rosemarie after first seeing her in a train station. After tracking her down, he soon learns about her hearing impairment, but becomes fascinated with how she navigates life with the inability to hear, especially since music is Drew’s true passion. When Rosemarie and Drew start seeing each other, their relationship is strengthened by their ambitions and the need for support that they share. Despite initial criticism and commentary from Rosemarie's mother and Drew's father and brother, the couple manages to learn more about each other's world and become closer. In the end, they give each the love and confidence to succeed in achieving their dreams.,,

During World War II, Hannibal Lee (Laurence Fishburne), traveling by train to Tuskegee, Alabama, is joined by other African American men from different backgrounds. At the start of their training, they are met by 2nd Lt. Glenn (Courtney B. Vance), who had joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was credited with three kills. During training, Lewis Johns (Mekhi Phifer), and his instructor are killed when they fail to recover from a stall. Walter Peoples III (Allen Payne), who already has a pilot's license, performs an unauthorized aerobatic maneuver in order to impress Hannibal, but this results in him being removed from the training program. To avoid going home in disgrace, he commits suicide by deliberately crashing an aircraft.

An average professional ice hockey defenseman is relegated to the minor leagues because his play is not aggressive enough. In an effort to get back to the majors, he plays dirty and gets into fights on the ice, which gets him back to the major. His aggressive play results in the death of another player as a result of injuries sustained during a game, and results in his being charged with manslaughter. The player appears largely indifferent to the situation, appearing to view it as a normal part of playing top level ice hockey.
