Rodolphe Rassendyll, un touriste anglais, arrive à Strelsau, capitale d'un pays imaginaire d'Europe Centrale, la Ruritanie. Il y rencontre un lointain cousin dont il est le parfait sosie, le prince héritier Rodolphe V. Celui-ci doit être couronné Roi le lendemain, mais à l'issue de la soirée que les deux parents éloignés passent ensemble, le futur souverain ne peut être ranimé : il a bu un vin drogué par une complice de son demi-frère, Michael de Strelsau, lequel escompte se proclamer Régent du Royaume, en l'absence à la Cérémonie du Couronnement de Rodolphe V, puis faire assassiner ce dernier pour accéder ainsi au Trône. Mais deux fidèles du prince légitime, le Colonel Zapt et Fritz von Tarlenheim, font accepter par Rassendyll qu'il joue le rôle de souverain au couronnement, grâce à cette providentielle ressemblance. Les choses se compliquent lorsque Rodolphe V, toujours endormi, est enlevé le même jour par le mercenaire Rupert de Hentzau ; en outre, Rassendyll tombe amoureux de la Princesse Flavia, promise en mariage au prince héritier.

Cal Reynolds, un hors-la-loi, arrive à échapper au shérif et à son posse. Il retrouve dans un saloon Butch, le chef de la bande, en train de faire des avances à Jennie Lee, une jeune institutrice fiancée au shérif Bentley. Par un concours de circonstances, Cal se retrouve marié à Jennie, et de ce fait il envisage de devenir honnête. Au milieu du XIX siècle, au bord du Mississippi, le jeune Huckleberry Finn vit chez la veuve Douglas et sa sœur, Miss Watson. Il a du mal à se tenir comme un gentleman, préférant l'école buissonnière et marcher pieds nus. Une nuit, Pap Finn, le père de Huck, se rend chez M Douglas et lui demande 800 dollars pour qu'elle puisse garder son fils. Entendant cela, Huck décide de partir pour qu'elle n'ait pas à payer, mais il est rattrapé par son père qui l'enferme dans une cabane. Le garçon réussit à s'enfuir, et laisse des indices suggérant qu'il aurait été tué et jeté dans le fleuve. Il remonte le fleuve et, quelque temps après, rencontre son ami Jim, un esclave de M Douglas qui s'est enfui car elle avait prévu de le vendre pour avoir assez d'argent pour garder Huck. À leur insu, les indices laissés par Huck et la disparition de Jim font croire aux autorités que c'est Jim le coupable du meurtre. Jim essaye de gagner un État non esclavagiste et de rejoindre sa femme, et Huck décide de l'aider. Plus en amont ils rencontrent le "King" et le "Duke", qui ont été débarqués d'un bateau pour avoir escroqués des passagers.

Circus workers land an aircraft in the jungles of Africa in search of lions for their show. While trapping lions, the three men meet up with Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller), Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan) and their adopted son Boy (Johnny Sheffield). Watching Boy's tricks with the elephants, the head of the circus, Buck Rand (Charles Bickford), realizes that Boy would be a great act for the circus. The group is attacked by natives, and it appears that Tarzan and Jane have perished in a jungle fire. The men take Boy on an aircraft back to the United States. Tarzan's loyal chimp Cheeta wakes Tarzan and Jane before they are burned by the fire. Then Cheeta tells Tarzan that Boy has left with the men on the plane.

In 1465, honorable but penniless Scottish knight Quentin Durward (Robert Taylor) agrees to go to France to find out if the beautiful young heiress, Isabelle, Countess of Marcroy (Kay Kendall), would be a suitable wife for his aged uncle (that is, if she is as rich as is claimed). The marriage has been arranged by Charles, Duke of Burgundy (Alec Clunes) for his ward to cement an alliance with Scotland, but she wants nothing to do with it, so she runs away and seeks the protection of Charles' great rival, Louis XI (Robert Morley), King of France. Quentin pursues and manages to foil an attempted robbery by brigands under the command of Count William de La Marck (Duncan Lamont), though Isabelle continues on her way unaware of her protector's identity.

The story is loosely based on Jesus Christ's parable of the prodigal son, from the Biblical New Testament Gospels, although considerable liberties are taken with the source material, chief among them being the addition of a female lead in the form of the high priestess of Astarte, Samarra (Turner). Micah (Purdom), a young Hebrew farm boy, sees Samarra and says he will have her. He demands that his father give him his inheritance and journeys to the city of Damascus. There Samarra seduces him into losing his inheritance and betraying his religious faith. Enduring a number of difficulties, Micah finally realizes where he belongs and returns home to his father, who forgives Michael all of his sins and orders a lavish celebration of his return.
