It tells the story of René, a young man from the slums, trained by the French Resistance in World War II to kill Germans. He continues to kill long after the war has ended, as it is all he knows.
It was entered into the 1952 Cannes Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize.

Synopsis
René Le Guen (Marcel Mouloudji) is a former resistance fighter trained as a young man as a professional killer. After World War II, he has no qualms in applying these skills and is arrested for murder. Convicted and condemned to death, he is held in a prison cell with other murderers sentenced to death. Men to be guillotined are taken out at night, so they wait in fear and only sleep after dawn. While Le Guen's lawyer (Claude Laydu) tries to achieve a pardon for his client, three of Le Guen's fellow inmates are executed, one by one, in the course of the film.Actors

Jacques Arnaud arrives in a small town somewhere in the province. Soon a citizen reports to him that strangers have broken into his house where they stole a mysterious "black dossier". This file had been given to him by a recently demised citizen named Le Guen. The content of this file included information on the town's foremost businessman who behind his proper façade seems to be a ruthless fraudster. Le 21 août 1910, un berger, débile léger, José María Grimaldos, surnommé El cepa (Le Cep) est aperçu pour la dernière fois sur la route menant de la commune de Osa de la Vega à Tresjuncos, dans la province de Cuenca (Castille-La Manche). La famille de celui-ci, très inquiète, alerte les autorités policières. Deux bergers, Gregorio Valero et León Sánchez, sont suspectés en septembre 1911. L'affaire est pourtant close, faute de preuves suffisantes. En 1913, le juge Isasa fait rouvrir le dossier : Gregorio et León sont incarcérés par la Guardia Civil. Soumis à des interrogatoires serrés suivis de tortures, les deux hommes finissent par avouer un meurtre imaginaire. Le procureur requiert la peine de mort. Mais, en mai 1918, un jury populaire inflige dix-huit ans de prison aux deux condamnés. Après onze ans d'emprisonnement, Gregorio et León sont libérés dans le cadre d'une loi d'amnistie générale (février 1924). Deux ans plus tard, au début de l'année 1926, José María Grimaldos est découvert vivant dans un village voisin. Au cours d'un processus judiciaire plutôt long, les condamnations seront annulées par la Cour suprême.

Philadelphia, 1999. In a violent home invasion, engineer Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is forced to witness the rape and murder of his wife and young daughter by Clarence James Darby (Christian Stolte) and his accomplice Rupert Ames (Josh Stewart). Prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) is unable to use DNA evidence to securely convict both accused. Unwilling to take a chance on lowering his high and yet unbeaten 96% conviction rate, he chooses to make a deal with Darby (the actual murderer), letting him plead guilty to a lesser charge, in return for testifying against Ames. Ames is falsely found guilty of masterminding the break-in and both murders and is sentenced to death. Shelton feels betrayed by Rice's actions, as he had pleaded with him not to make the deal and to at least try convict both of them, and because he chose to release the actual killer. Darby serves his shortened sentence and is released just a few years later.
