Wholly Moses! is a 1980 Biblical spoof similar to that of Monty Python's Life of Brian. Dudley Moore, between performances in 10 and Arthur, plays Old Testament-era idol maker Herschel, whose life and adventures seem to parallel that of the more famous Moses, all the while being misled to think he is the prophet of God.

Synopsis

A couple of tourists, Harvey and Zoey, discover a lost scroll from the Book of Herschel, evidently someone who received commandments from God, only to have Moses take all the credit.

In 1939 New Orleans, a roguish German Shepherd named Charlie B. Barkin escapes from a dog pound with the help of his friend, a dachshund named Itchy Itchiford. They return to a casino riverboat on the bayou, which is formerly run by Charlie with his partner, a bulldog named Carface Caruthers. Not wanting to share the profits with Charlie, Carface persuades him to leave town with 50% of the casino's earnings. Charlie agrees, but is later intoxicated and murdered by Carface. He is sent to Heaven where a whippet angel named Annabelle (who was named in the sequel) tells him that a gold watch representing his life has stopped. He steals and winds it, sending Charlie back to Earth, but is told that if he dies again, he will go to Hell. After reuniting with Itchy, they discover that Carface is holding an orphan girl named Anne-Marie (presumably kidnapped from the orphanage by Carface), who has the ability to talk to animals and gain knowledge of a race's results beforehand, allowing Carface to rig the odds on the rat races and become rich. They rescue her, intending to use her abilities to get revenge on Carface, though Charlie tells her that they plan to give their winnings to the poor and help her find parents.

Alby Sherman is a Jewish man whose father died when he was young. Un prêtre marche en priant dans un couvent puis sort de scène. Un diable apparaît dans le baptistère. Il tire les cloches, et se change en prêtre lorsque passent plusieurs religieuses. Il doit alors leur faire la messe. Il se rechange alors en diable. Effrayées, elles s’enfuient, alors que lui fait disparaître le baptistère et les chaises. Il fait ensuite apparaître des gargouilles et des diablotins. Une immense figure diabolique apparaît, se change en grosse grenouille, et le diable la chevauche sous les applaudissements de ses affidés, qui se sont saisis de leur fourche et dansent. Finalement, les religieuses avec leurs croix font tout disparaître. Le diable se bat alors avec un gentilhomme, puis avec le prêtre. Une cérémonie religieuse arrive, avec un ange armé, qui terrasse le diable.

Abandonnant alors l'idée de vivre sans elle, les trois hommes se lancent à sa recherche et finissent par la retrouver en butte aux avances d'un photographe de mode dont ils se débarrassent laborieusement après avoir échappé à trois minettes énamourées : Patricia, Carole et Minette. Et pourtant, pas plus qu'avant, la « Belle » ne consent à les aimer.
