Pierrot vit dans le décompte. Sa vie s'égrène à l'envers. Pour obsession le temps qui passe, et pour hantise la mort de sa mère. Sa mère, son père, une maison démesurée à l'écart du bourg. Sa seule amie Elise, et le bunker solitaire en haut de la falaise, voilà tout l'univers de Pierrot. Mais Pierrot est ailleurs, cadenassé dans son monde intérieur. Au-delà du miroir, la réalité se déforme. Sous son regard, l'âge prend mille visages. Les visions l'assaillent de plus en plus souvent, deviennent hallucinations. La vieillesse est partout, déjà autour de lui, en lui. Pris dans son propre engrenage, Pierrot se dérègle de jour en jour... Une nuit, le compte à rebours touche à sa fin, les limites de sa folie sont atteintes et Pierrot se retrouve face à face avec le vieillard qu'il sera lui-même. In the 19th century, a Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) summons The Brothers Grimm to her palace, where the brothers discuss their interpretation of the Cinderella story and notice a painting displayed in the room. The Grande Dame shows the brothers a glass slipper and tells them the story of Danielle de Barbarac, the true story of Cinderella. In 16th-century France, widower Auguste de Barbarac (Jeroen Krabbé), father of eight-year-old Danielle, marries Rodmilla de Ghent (Anjelica Huston), a wealthy baroness with two young daughters, Maguerite and Jacqueline, but he dies of a heart attack shortly afterwards. Before dying, Auguste's last words are directed to Danielle, which causes the Baroness to envy Danielle and treat her miserably for the next ten years. While Marguerite (Megan Dodds) is hostile and cruel to Danielle, Jacqueline (Melanie Lynskey) is kinder and more respectful to her, though she often stays out of the crossfires to keep the peace.

The film is set in the fictional County Durham mining town of Everington Village during the 1984-85 UK miners' strike, and centres on the character of 11-year-old Billy Elliot, his love of dance, and his hopes of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Over-worked, bullied and terrified of being put in foster care, seventeen-year-old Katie Gibbs (Lucy Hale) is a singer who does her stepmother and stepsiblings' bidding with no complaints. Laurent Monier est professeur agrégé d'histoire au lycée Fénelon d'Annecy. Le jour de ses 40 ans, il rentre dans son appartement plongé dans le noir ; il ignore que sa femme, ses enfants, sa belle-mère et ses amis sont en réalité dissimulés dans l'obscurité, n'attendant que le bon moment pour lui faire une surprise. Mais avant que son épouse n'ait pu rallumer la lumière, Monier décroche le téléphone et se croyant seul, bavarde avec l'appelant que l'on devine être sa maîtresse. Hélène, sa femme, rallume alors la lumière et s'enfuit dans sa chambre, alors même que leur jeune fils enclenche innocemment une cassette audio diffusant une chanson de joyeux anniversaire. Monier découvre le désastre sous l'œil narquois de son inénarrable belle-mère et de ses amis, qui ne savent plus où se mettre. Le couple divorce. Hélène étant nommée dans un lycée parisien, Laurent demande également sa mutation afin de rester près de ses enfants.
