Winter of Discontent (Arabic: الشتا إللى فات‎, translit. El sheita elli fat) is a 2012 Egyptian drama film directed by Ibrahim El Batout. The film was selected as the Egyptian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.

Synopsis

Trois histoires croisées, avec en arrière-plan la Révolution égyptienne de 2011 : l'histoire d'un officier de sécurité d’État, celle d'un présentateur de télévision entraîné au milieu des événements, et celle d'un ingénieur. Le film explore l'angoisse d'un peuple dont le pays a radicalement changé, dans une atmosphère de terreur et d'incertitude caractérisant les derniers jours de règne de Moubarak.

Three crucial days in a Hassan's life. First day. U.S. energy giant Connex is losing control of key Middle East oil fields in a kingdom ruled by the al-Subaai family. The emirate's foreign minister, Prince Nasir (Alexander Siddig), has granted natural gas drilling rights to a Chinese company, greatly upsetting the U.S. oil industry and government. To compensate for its decreased production capacity, Connex initiates a shady merger with Killen, a smaller oil company that recently won the drilling rights to key petroleum fields in Kazakhstan. Connex-Killen ranks as the world's twenty-third largest economy, and antitrust regulators at the U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) have misgivings. A Washington, D.C.-based law firm headed by Dean Whiting (Christopher Plummer) is hired to smooth the way for the merger. Bennett Holiday (Jeffrey Wright) is assigned to promote the impression of due diligence to the DOJ, deflecting any allegations of corruption.

Laila, portrayed by Hend Sabri, is a rather unhappy and lonely radio talk show host who listens to other people’s fantasies on her late night segment. Youssef, played by Amr Waked, is an anesthetist by day and an illegal abortion surgeon by night. The story begins with each character’s separate tale being told in parallel and the difficulties they face with society. The protagonists have one thing in common, loneliness. Perhaps a way to satisfy this, they both feed off the grief of others- Laila through her talk show and Youssef at his legal place of work. Genenet Al Asmak can be compared to a 48 hour walk in Laila and Amr's lives. From the issues faced in the household by Amr and his terminal father played by Gamil Ratib to Laila's occasional party-girl evenings with her friends, "a walk in their shoes" effect is established. The film ends with the two protagonists physically meeting in Egypt’s Grotto Gardens and realizing the loneliness they feel in each other.
