Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) are best friends and roommates living in Providence, Rhode Island who struggle at every aspect of life. Friends of the first part can be found in the ski resort of Val d'Isere where Jerome, Gigi and Popeye work. Jerome and Gigi are now married : Gigi holds a pancake while Jerome exercised in his medical practice. Nathalie and Bernard, reconciled and fairly "new rich" are owners of a time share. Jean-Claude, always in search of a soul mate and still no seduction, desperately trying to dredge anything that moves. Christiane landed with a married man and much older than her, Marius. Popeye is now much less sure of himself: humiliated by his wife cheating on him with his cousin, he claims his friends that he is the manager of a ski shop when it was held by the same couple. During an exit off piste skiing, the group loses before being rescued by mountain peasants, which will make them taste artisan food and drink: first of pussy - a strong cheese soaked in fat , rinds, and wood alcohol for two or three seasons - and the shallot liquor found in garlic juice "because shallot alone, it s'rait too bland" in a parody of the famous scene Tontons gunslingers.

American downhill skier David Chappellet (Robert Redford) arrives in Wengen, Switzerland to join the United States ski team, along with fellow newcomer D. K. Bryan (Kenneth Kirk). Both men were sent for by team coach Eugene Claire (Gene Hackman) to replace one of his top skiers who was recently injured during an FIS competition. Raised in the small town of Idaho Springs, Colorado, Chappellet is a loner with a single-minded focus on becoming a skiing champion, and shows little interest in being a team player. After refusing to race at the Lauberhorn because of a late starting position, he makes his European skiing debut at the Arlberg-Kandahar in Austria, where he finishes in an impressive fourth position. In the final race of the season at the Hahnenkamm-Rennen in Kitzbühel, Austria, he crashes.

Though he makes a substantial sum of money through these sales, he spends most of it on Louise, buying her clothes and giving her money so that she can go on dates. Louise is selfish and irresponsible, unable to hold down a job and frequently going off with men, leaving Simon alone at home. Though Simon tries to teach her how to refurbish the skis, she leaves with Bruno (Yann Trégouët) on a short vacation.

Samir et Stéphane, deux amis de Grenoble, fabriquent des skis de fond de compétition de haute qualité, mais leur entreprise est au bord de la faillite le jour où l'athlète suédois qui devait participer aux Jeux Olympiques avec des skis de leur marque décide de se tourner vers un autre fabricant. Stéphane convainc alors Sam de reprendre le ski de fond et de tenter de se qualifier pour les Jeux sous les couleurs de l'Algérie, le pays de son père. Un défi immense mené au prix d'un entraînement intensif car Sam, qui a passé la quarantaine, n'est plus aussi en forme que par le passé. La fédération algérienne lui promet une bourse de 20 000 dollars pour ses frais sportifs, ce qui va lui donner l'occasion de revenir en Algérie et de redécouvrir ses racines et sa famille, lui qui ne parle même pas l'arabe. Le défi sportif est immense, tant sur le plan physique que parce que la survie de l'entreprise dépend de sa réussite. Son père, qui a tout fait pour que ses enfants réussissent en France, y croit, et prépare aussi un beau cadeau à Sam : lui offrir tous ses oliviers au bled pour qu'il redevienne un jour, comme lui, un paysan algérien actif fier de ses valeurs ancestrales.
