Gendo Ikari (en japonais : 碇 ゲンドウ ()) est l'un des personnages principaux de la série d'animation japonaise Neon Genesis Evangelion, de son film conclusif The End of Evangelion et de la tétralogie cinématographique Rebuild of Evangelion. Il apparaît également dans les nombreuses adaptations en manga et jeu vidéo que la série a connu depuis sa création en 1995.Gendo est le commandant de l'organisation confidentielle NERV chargée de combattre des monstres appelés « Anges » grâce à des Evangelions, des armes ayant l'apparence de robots géants. Homme mystérieux travaillant en réalité pour une organisation secrète, la SEELE, il a en réalité ses propres objectifs. Père du personnage principal Shinji Ikari, il se montre extrêmement distant avec son fils qu'il a abandonné après la disparition de sa femme, événement dont il ne s'est jamais remis.

Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami, pilots of giant Evangelion cyborgs, are sent into in space to retrieve a container in which Evangelion Unit 01 and its pilot Shinji Ikari are sealed. When Asuka grabs the container with her Evangelion unit, it releases attack drones. Unit 01 awakens and destroys the drones, then deactivates and descends back to Earth. Kaworu Nagisa watches and says he has been waiting for Shinji.

In 2015, fifteen years after a global cataclysm known as the Second Impact, Shinji Ikari is summoned to Tokyo-3 by his estranged father Gendo, the commander of the mysterious NERV organization. Shinji is caught in the crossfire between UN forces and an angel, an alien lifeform, colonel Misato Katsuragi rescues him and brings him to NERV headquarters. Gendo demands Shinji pilot Evangelion Unit 01, a giant mecha cyborg, against the angel. Shinji concedes when Gendo threatens to send Rei Ayanami, a wounded Evangelion pilot, into battle instead. Shinji and wins the fight after Unit 01 goes berserk and destroys the Angel.
