Michał Wołodyjowski (Jerzy Michał Wołodyjowski) is a fictional Polish hero, a great soldier, in Henryk Sienkiewicz's Trilogy: With Fire and Sword, The Deluge and Pan Wołodyjowski.
Michał Wołodyjowski is partly based on the historic figure, Colonel Jerzy Wołodyjowski, a Polish noble of the Korczak clan.
Michał Wołodyjowski, a Polish warrior, took part in many battles from a young age, being involved in a war which saw Poland confronted with four super-powers, yet still winning the war. In one of his battles, his army was outnumbered by 7 thousand and the Turkish army yet still retreated from the sight of Wołodyjowski, because of his great legend on his skills with the sword. He lived during the second half of the 17th century. Wołodyjowski, called the "Little Knight" due to his short height, is one of the best fencers in the country and the rest of the world as well, a true master of szabla (a type of Polish saber). Along with his friends Jan Skrzetuski and Onufry Zagłoba, he fights to save his country from foreign invaders.
Wołodyjowski dies in the Siege of Kamieniec Podolski, when together with his friend Ketling, he blows himself up in a gunpowder depot, rather than witness the surrender of the fortress that is being made by the betrayal of the church joining the Turks.
The novels have also been made into films: With Fire and Sword, The Deluge and Pan Wolodyjowski.
