Montgomery Scott, surnommé Scotty, est un personnage de fiction de Star Trek, et plus particulièrement de la série originale, interprété par James Doohan.
Biography
Montgomery Scott est l'ingénieur en chef de l'Enterprise NCC-1701. Il est écossais.Né en 2222, Scott commence sa carrière d'ingénieur spatial en 2241. Il sert à bord de onze vaisseaux avant d'être promu en 2265 ingénieur en chef de l'Enterprise.
Ingénieur en chef de l'Entreprise, il parvient toujours à régler les problèmes et à réparer les nombreuses avaries du vaisseau dans le temps imparti. Son truc pour épater le capitaine James Kirk : il donne un temps de réparation plus long que celui dont il a besoin en réalité !
Scotty a deux amours : son Enterprise et le whisky. L'alcool est parfois un atout pour faire rouler sous la table un indésirable : un breuvage, dont on sait seulement qu'il est « vert », permet à Scotty de se débarrasser d'un Kelvan (voir Tu n'es que poussière - By Any Other Name). Parfois, l'abus de boisson lui sert de prétexte pour se bagarrer avec des Klingons, surtout quand ils osent insulter l'Enterprise (Tribulations - The Trouble with Tribbles).
En 2295, le capitaine Scott prend sa retraite à 72 ans. À bord du vaisseau-cargo Jenolen, en route pour sa résidence de retraite, l'ingénieur se réfugie dans le tampon d'un téléporteur afin d'échapper à un danger. 75 ans plus tard, en 2369, il est recueilli par le capitaine Jean-Luc Picard et les membres de l'Enterprise NCC-1701-D (voir Star Trek : La Nouvelle Génération : Reliques - Relics). À cette occasion, il pense que Kirk est toujours vivant et à la tête du vaisseau, ce qui est une erreur de continuité car il assiste à la disparition du capitaine dans Star Trek : Générations.
C'est dans ce même épisode que lors d'une visite au salon des officiers où Data tient office de barman que Scotty demande à boire autre chose que de l'alcool synthétique. Data lui sert alors un breuvage et lorsque Scotty lui demande de quoi il s'agit, Data répond « C'est vert » (« it's green ») faisant référence à l'épisode Tu n'es que poussière et créant ainsi un moment humoristique.

2263. Sur une planète, le capitaine James T. Kirk agit à titre d'ambassadeur pour conclure un traité de paix entre deux peuples ennemis. En guise de cadeau, il apporte un artéfact qui faisait partie d'une puissante arme inconnue. Cependant, le chef de la planète s'emporte, croyant qu'on veut se moquer de lui et soumettre son peuple. Kirk tente de l'apaiser, mais le chef préfère attaquer Kirk, imité par ses congénères. Grâce à Scotty, Kirk retourne sur le vaisseau USS Enterprise. Après cette mission manquée, Kirk se questionne sur son rôle dans Starfleet. Après trois ans de mission et alors que son anniversaire approche — il aura un an de plus que son père quand il est mort —, il n'éprouve plus qu'ennui et malaise, même si son équipage est l'un des meilleurs selon ses dires.

Four years after Kirk's promotion in 2259, the starship USS Enterprise studies a primitive culture on the planet Nibiru. Captain James T. Kirk and his First Officer, Commander Spock, save the planet's inhabitants from an extinction-threatening volcanic eruption, but Kirk violates the Prime Directive, exposing the Enterprise to the native inhabitants to save Spock's life. Returning to Earth, Kirk loses command of the Enterprise and Admiral Christopher Pike is reinstated as its commanding officer with Kirk demoted to first officer and the rank of Commander. For his part in the incident, Spock is reassigned to another ship. An officers' meeting is called to discuss the bombing of a Section 31 installation in London perpetrated by the renegade Starfleet operative John Harrison (Cumberbatch). Harrison attacks the meeting in a jumpship, killing Pike. Kirk disables the jumpship, but Harrison uses a portable transporter to escape to Kronos, the homeworld of hostile aliens known as Klingons.

In the 23rd century, the Federation starship USS Kelvin is investigating a "lightning storm" in space. A Romulan ship, the Narada, emerges from the storm and attacks the Kelvin. Narada 's first officer, Ayel, demands that the Kelvin 's Captain Robau come aboard to negotiate a truce. Once aboard, Robau is questioned about the current stardate and an "Ambassador Spock", whom he professes not to know. Narada 's commander, Nero, kills him, and continues his attack on the Kelvin. George Kirk, the Kelvin 's first officer, orders the ship's personnel, including his pregnant wife Winona, to evacuate the ship while he pilots the Kelvin on a collision course with the Narada, as the auto-pilot function has been damaged. At the cost of his life, Kirk ensures Winona's survival as she gives birth to James T.

In the year 2293, retired Captain James T. Kirk, Montgomery Scott, and Pavel Chekov attend the maiden voyage of the Federation starship USS Enterprise-B, under the command of the unseasoned Capt. John Harriman. During the voyage, Enterprise is pressed into a rescue mission to save two El-Aurian ships from a strange energy ribbon. Enterprise is able to save some of the refugees before their ships are destroyed, but the starship becomes trapped in the ribbon. Kirk goes to deflector control to alter the deflector dish, allowing Enterprise to escape, but the trailing end of the ribbon rakes across Enterprise 's hull, exposing the section Kirk is in to space; he is presumed dead.

In Los Angeles, Billie York (an uncredited Whoopi Goldberg) is murdered by a man dressed as a Wilderness Girl because she possesses a microfilm with the recipe to turn cocaine into Wilderness Girls cookies and she won't hand it over to the ones that seek it. Her former partner, Wes Luger (Samuel L. Jackson), takes the case in an attempt to avenge her death. As part of the terms for letting Luger taking the case, psychotic burned-out narcotics agent Jack Colt (Emilio Estevez) is assigned to the case with Luger. Under the advice of their captain (Frank McRae), they meet Dr. Harold Leacher (F. Murray Abraham) who informs Jack that the case has something to do with General Mortars (William Shatner) under whom Jack had worked during his days in Vietnam. Following Leacher's advice they pursue the villains, however, before the villains are apprehended, Luger must journey into his past to realize the right thing to do.

As a Klingon moon, Praxis, explodes without warning, the starship USS Excelsior, commanded by Captain Hikaru Sulu, is struck by the shock wave and its crew discovers that much of the moon has been obliterated. The loss of their key energy production facility and the destruction of the Klingon homeworld's ozone layer throws the Klingon Empire into turmoil. No longer able to maintain a hostile footing, the Klingons sue for peace with their longstanding enemy, the United Federation of Planets. Accepting the proposal before the Klingons revert to a more belligerent approach, Starfleet sends the USS Enterprise-A to meet with the Klingon Chancellor, Gorkon, and escort him to negotiations on Earth. Enterprise 's captain, James T. Kirk, whose son David was murdered by Klingons years earlier, opposes the negotiations and resents his assignment.

The crew of the newly commissioned USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) are enjoying shore leave after the starship's shakedown cruise goes poorly. At Yosemite National Park, Captain James T. Kirk is camping with Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy. Their leave is interrupted when the Enterprise is ordered by Starfleet Command to rescue human, Klingon, and Romulan hostages on the planet Nimbus III. In 2286, a large cylindrical probe moves through space, sending out an indecipherable signal and disabling the power of ships it passes. As it takes up orbit around Earth, its signal disables the global power grid and generates planetary storms, creating catastrophic, sun-blocking cloud cover. Starfleet Command sends out a planetary distress call and warns starships not to approach Earth.

The Federation Starship Enterprise returns to Earth following a battle with the superhuman Khan Noonien Singh, who tried to destroy the Enterprise by detonating an experimental terraforming device known as Genesis. The casualties of the fight include Admiral James T. Kirk's Vulcan friend, Spock, whose casket was launched into space and eventually landed on the planet created by the Genesis Device. On arriving at Earth Spacedock, Doctor Leonard McCoy begins to act strangely and is detained. Starfleet Admiral Morrow visits the Enterprise and informs the crew the ship is to be decommissioned; the crew is ordered not to speak about Genesis due to political fallout over the device.

In the year 2285, Admiral James T. Kirk oversees a simulator session of Captain Spock's trainees. In the simulation, Lieutenant Saavik commands the starship USS Enterprise on a rescue mission to save the crew of a damaged ship. When the Enterprise enters the Klingon Neutral Zone to reach the ship it is attacked by Klingon cruisers and critically damaged. The simulation is named the "Kobayashi Maru"—a no-win scenario designed to test the character of Starfleet officers. Later, Dr. McCoy joins Kirk on his birthday; seeing Kirk in low spirits, the doctor advises Kirk to get a new command and not grow old behind a desk.

In 2273, a Starfleet monitoring station, Epsilon Nine, detects an alien force, hidden in a massive cloud of energy, moving through space towards Earth. The cloud destroys three of the Klingon Empire's new K't'inga-class warships and the monitoring station en route. On Earth, the starship Enterprise is undergoing a major refit; her former commanding officer, James T. Kirk, has been promoted to Admiral and works in San Francisco as Chief of Starfleet Operations. Starfleet dispatches Enterprise to investigate the cloud entity as the ship is the only one in intercept range, requiring her new systems to be tested in transit.
