The Tramp (Charlot in several languages), also known as The Little Tramp, was British actor Charlie Chaplin's most memorable on-screen character and an icon in world cinema during the era of silent film.The Tramp, as portrayed by Chaplin, is a childlike, bumbling but overall good-hearted character who is most famously portrayed as a vagrant who endeavors to behave with the manners and dignity of a gentleman despite his actual social status. However, while he is ready to take what paying work is available, he also uses his cunning to get what he needs to survive and escape the authority figures who will not tolerate his antics. Chaplin's films did not always portray the Tramp as a vagrant, however. The character ("The Little Fellow," as Chaplin called him) was rarely referred to by any names onscreen, although he was sometimes identified as "Charlie" and rarely, as in the original silent version of The Gold Rush, "The Little funny Tramp".

Made by Keystone Studios and directed by Henry Lehrman, the movie portrays Chaplin as a spectator at a "baby-cart race" in Venice, Los Angeles. The spectator keeps getting in the way of the camera and interferes with the race, causing great frustration to the public and participants. The film was shot during the Junior Vanderbilt Cup, an actual race with Chaplin and Lehrman improvising gags in front of real-life spectators.

Chaplin, in tramp attire, sits in the park with his wife, Mabel. While he is gone to a bar, a large man holding a tennis racquet moves in on his wife. Chaplin returns to find them laughing together. But despite kicking him and hitting him with his cane the man is undeterred in his wooing of his wife.

Un jeune homme, embauche Charlot pour s'occuper de son oncle handicapé afin de pouvoir passer du temps avec sa fiancée. Mais Charlot n'a pas d'argent et souhaite aller au bar. The Masquerader is a comedy short film, that is about making films at Keystone. Charlie plays an actor who bungles several scenes and is kicked out. The next day a strange beautiful woman appears to audition for the film, it's Charlie in drag. After doing a perfect impersonation of a female, Charlie has drawn the attention of the director and is hired to act in his films. The director gives the beautiful woman the mens dressing room to change in and to Charlie's mistake he returns to his tramp costume. When the director returns, looking for the woman, he finds Charlie and that he has been tricked. Angry, the director chases Charlie through the studio until Charlie decides to jump into what he thinks is a prop well. The film ends with the director and other actors laughing at Charlie as he is trapped in the bottom of the well. The plot involving a man dressing up as a woman is quite popular in old silent movies.

In a hotel lobby a heavily drunk tramp runs into an elegant lady, Mabel, who gets tied up in her dog's leash, and falls down. He later runs into her in the hotel corridor, locked out of her room. They run through various rooms. Mabel ends up in the room of an elderly husband where she hides under the bed. Enter the jealous wife, who soon attacks Mabel, her husband, and Mabel's lover, not to mention the staggeringly drunken tramp.

Dans un parc, Charlot commence à vouloir flirter avec une jeune femme sur un banc. Mais très vite le mari de celle-ci arrive et chasse le vagabond. Une dispute éclate et les deux hommes se lancent des briques dans la figure. Deux policiers tentent d'intervenir, mais la fourberie de Charlot lui permet de s'en sortir temporairement, avant de se faire rattraper. Finalement, tout le monde finit dans l'eau du lac après une dernière bousculade.
