Biography

Cavens moved to the United States soon after birth and began his career only aged 8 in a number of films in 1914, including The Town of Nazareth, also starring Charlotte Burton. However after 1914, Cavens took a break from acting. He returned to it as an adult over thirty years later, playing Valvert, the nobleman whom Cyrano duels with while reciting a poem, in Cyrano de Bergerac (1950). (Cavens was the son of Fred Cavens, a fencing instructor in Hollywood). Between 1950 and 1969, he made a number of appearances in film and television, and appeared in Star Trek in 1969 shortly before his retirement.

A boy, Jimmy Warren, living along the coast in Massachusetts is upset with the unfairness of "modern" life in 1960 when his father scolds him about his school grades. He plays on a wrecked ship along the shore with Kathy. He picks up an odd jar, and wishes he were back in the olden days, on a pirate ship. When Jimmy utters "Where am I?", the magic jar pops open, and a strange little man pops out. He introduces himself as Abu the Genie, and states that he has granted Jimmy his fondest wish: to be on a real pirate ship. Jimmy scoffs at the notion, but Abu insists that they are at that very moment passengers on Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the notorious Blackbeard.

In seventeenth century Paris, poet and supreme swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac (José Ferrer) stops a play from being shown because he cannot stand the bombastic style of the principal actor, Montfleury (Arthur Blake). An annoyed aristocratic fop, the Vicomte de Valvert (Albert Cavens), provokes him into a duel by tritely insulting Cyrano's enormous nose. Cyrano first mocks his lack of wit, improvising numerous inventive ways in which Valvert could have phrased it (much to the amusement of the audience). He then composes a ballade for the occasion on the spot and recites it during the swordfight. With the last line, he stabs his opponent.
