Albert Wolsky est un costumier américain pour le théâtre et le cinéma, né le 24 novembre 1930 à Paris.
Au début des années 1960, Wolsky renonce à travailler dans l'agence de voyages familiale et trouve du travail comme assistant d'Helene Pons pour la comédie musicale Camelot, un des plus grands succès de l'époque. Il va alors côtoyer plusieurs des grands noms du costume, comme Adrian. Il devient ensuite assistant de plusieurs costumiers (Helene Pons, Ann Roth, Theoni V. Aldredge) avant d'être en charge lui-même de plusieurs spectacles de Broadway.
Il se tourne ensuite vers le cinéma, d'abord à New York, son premier film est alors Le cœur est un chasseur solitaire en 1968, puis à Hollywood où il rejoint en 1976 son compagnon James Mitchell.

La famille d'Albert Wolsky quitte l'Europe au tout début des années 1940 et s'installe à New York. Il fait des études au City College of New York.Au début des années 1960, Wolsky renonce à travailler dans l'agence de voyages familiale et trouve du travail comme assistant d'Helene Pons pour la comédie musicale Camelot, un des plus grands succès de l'époque. Il va alors côtoyer plusieurs des grands noms du costume, comme Adrian. Il devient ensuite assistant de plusieurs costumiers (Helene Pons, Ann Roth, Theoni V. Aldredge) avant d'être en charge lui-même de plusieurs spectacles de Broadway.

Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is a faded Hollywood actor best known for playing the superhero Birdman decades ago in a series of films. He is often tormented by the mocking, critical inner voice of Birdman, and frequently visualizes himself performing feats of levitation and telekinesis. The film opens with a quotation from Raymond Carver stating that the main fulfillment in life is related to having once been loved, then cuts to a dramatic atmospheric disturbance resembling a meteor descending in flames. The film then cuts to a surreal shot depicting Riggan as levitating in his stage room. Riggan hopes to reinvent his career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production of a loosely based adaptation of Carver's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love".

The story is set during the Great Depression, specifically around the time of the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. Camilla (Salma Hayek) is a fiery, beautiful Mexican café waitress who aspires one day to be above her current standing in society, to make something of herself, to give her and her future children a place and chance in the world. Farrell's character is portrayed as a struggling writer who comes to Los Angeles's Bunker Hill area to start his writing career. Though he falls in love with Camilla, he does not marry her. Later, Camilla is infected by tuberculosis and leaves Arturo without informing him. When Arturo finds her, she is about to die and he promises to marry her, but Camilla dies and Arturo writes a novel dedicated to Camilla. Arturo writes a dedication in one of his books to her and throws it into the sand.

Michael Sullivan Sr. (Hanks) is an enforcer for Irish mob boss John Rooney (Newman) in Rock Island, Illinois during the Great Depression. Rooney raised the orphan Sullivan and loves him more than his own biological son, the unstable Connor (Craig). Connor snaps and kills disgruntled associate Finn McGovern when meeting him with Sullivan, resulting in Sullivan gunning down McGovern's men.
