The movie is set in the year 1993. The Wyrick family are delighted to receive a deal on a historic home in rural Georgia where they plan to raise their family free of the complications of city life. As the family settles in, the daughter Heidi (Emily Alyn Lind) starts to have conversations with a man she calls "Mr. Gordy"(Grant James)who owned the house before them.The house and the property was used as a shelter for the slaves. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Mr. Gordy is a spirit and one of several that Heidi is interacting with. Her abilities were inherited from her mother's side and, while her aunt accepts the visions, her mother Lisa (Abigail Spencer) is in complete denial and suppresses her visions with medication. The other spirits that Heidi communicates with are the slaves from the underground railroad who were once sheltered in the forest by her house.

After Artie Decker, Sports Commentator for the minor-league Fresno Grizzlies is fired from his job due to his old school talk and lack of social media, his eager-to-please wife, Diane, agrees to babysit their three grandkids, Harper, Turner and Barker in Atlanta when their daughter, Alice and her husband, Phillip go away for an entrepreneur exhibition. A counterfeiter of money is attacked by two masked men and threatened to inform them where a certain amount of counterfeited money is. The counterfeiter pleads ignorance and is subsequently killed. Tommy 'Hopscotch' Hopkins, who has the money, learns of the death of the counterfeiter and begins to fear for his own safety. Consequently, he asks his friend, the street smart Frankie (who owns a strip club), to assist him in an exchange of the fake money for real money which he has organised with some acquaintances. Frankie reluctantly agrees to assist his friend.
