When Levi Savage, a former Mormon Battalion member and missionary to Asia, agrees to assist the Willie Handcart Company as they journey to Salt Lake City in 1856, the late start and onset of a bitter winter leaves the pioneers unprepared and suffering as they cross the plains of the Midwestern United States. Elizabeth Panting, a woman who has converted to the LDS Church, escapes her drunken husband with her two little children, joining the handcart company. With the threat of winter starvation, illness, wolves, freezing river crossings, and death following them throughout their journey, Levi and others also witness the occurrences of divine miracles that enable them to complete their journey and arrive in Salt Lake City.

Two young men in white shirts are riding the streets of Nacogdoches, Texas on bicycles when they are hit by an old, pickup truck. The old man (who used to be a doctor) driving takes the stunned young men home to his house where he will check to see if they are hurt. While they are in the house, the two sons — Elliot (Corbin Allred) and Eugene (Kirby Heyborne) Buddles — strike up a conversation with them. The two young men turn out to be selling pesticides. One of the men is from New Jersey, and the other — Nate Harris — is from Paradise Valley, Idaho. Nate from Idaho starts talking about his family and produces pictures. As soon as Elliot sees the photo of Natalie (Lara Everly) he decides that he must go to meet her.

Young Justin Carver (Covey) was having Thanksgiving dinner with her family, only to end it with the news that her best friend Brenda (Hannelius) bickering parents finally decided that they were divorcing. But when she overhears her own parents, Stephanie and David Carver (Sellecca and Bernsen) having a heated argument, Jenny retreats to her bedroom. A few minutes later, Jenny peeks downstairs, only to see her mother Stephanie locked in a warm, romantic embrace with none other than Santa Claus (actually her dad in a Santa suit). He takes a photo, shows it to Brenda the next day, and then sends it to Mrs. Claus. Fueled by Brenda's own situation with her parents, Jenny jumps to the conclusion that her mother is having an affair with Santa. So he decides to behave as badly as possible in an attempt to prevent Santa from coming to his house on Christmas Eve night for her to at least make off with the girl's mother. The resulting hi-jinks include Jenny setting traps and throwing snowballs at a street Santa, and even getting himself in trouble at school. Then, on Christmas Eve, Jenny's mom receives a letter from the post office. Inside was the photo which didn't actually get sent. In the end, Jenny finds out that Santa was actually her dad and apologizes to the street Santa.
