He considers himself a "jerk" and so invents his own philosophy, which involves the destruction of the ways of his native land of Apulia, where all residents are devoted to the Catholic religion. However, the man cannot destroy the belief of the pilgrims of Salento, because a woman prevents him. She is an unknown "Santa Margherita", who tries to turn the man away from what she considers his weird and impossible philosophy. Successive scenes of the film show various dreamlike situations in which the two protagonists try to best each other. After a blasphemous dialogue between monks, the man includes his whole philosophy in a Moorish building. In fact, this seems to have been the scene of the massacre of the famous 800 Martyrs of Otranto, who are considered by the sceptic to be the absolute death of Christianity.

A son is born to a young couple in pre-war Italy. The father, motivated by jealousy, takes the baby into the desert to be abandoned, at which point the film’s setting changes to the ancient world. The child is rescued, named Edipo by King Polybus (Ahmed Belhachmi) and Queen Merope (Alida Valli) of Corinth and raised as their own son. Bob is a famous actor of various advertising, but slowly begins to go crazy. In fact, he seems to be haunted by normal animals that do not take kindly. A bull for example, Bob throws in a river, while the mice gnaw a rope that held him suspended from a helicopter to shoot a commercial. When Bob refuses to turn advertising with other animals as extras, it is immediately fired. On the verge of despair, enters an ordinary fly, which begins to haunt the lives of the poor Bob who tries to kill her in every way, to no avail. When the fly disappears, Bob also continues to hear the annoying buzzing, beating their hands everywhere like a real fool.
