The film follows 22-year-old Sébastien, a Georgian immigrant living in France and working construction jobs to support his poor family. Sébastien works on the home of Godon, a feeble morphine-addict who is under police surveillance. After Godon dies of an overdose, his widow informs Sébastien that she is unable to pay him. Sébastien then overhears the widow talking with one of Godon's friends, describing a mysterious "job" that Godon had lined up before his death. The destitute Sébastien steals an envelope containing the instructions for the job. The police begin following Sébastien as he uses the train ticket contained in the envelope.

Nadine Lefort travaille dans un cabinet d’architecte. Sa mère meurt brusquement ; elle hérite de la confiserie familiale et fait la connaissance d’Hélène et de Félix, locataires de sa mère, qui habitent juste au-dessus du magasin. Ne pouvant se résoudre à vendre la boutique, Nadine décide de la transformer en cabinet d’architecte et monte sa propre affaire avec ses collègues. Elle se prend d’affection pour le jeune Félix auprès duquel Hélène, dépressive, sans emploi, assume très difficilement son rôle de mère, à tel point que la DDASS menace de lui enlever la garde de son fils. Nadine décide de prendre les choses en main ; elle trouve un travail à Hélène et s’occupe de Félix qui, instable, décide de faire une fugue…

Bernard is a teacher in the suburbs and lives with Victoria. Didier is a wealthy Parisian pharmacist and is married to Murielle, Victoria's sister. While the former drives a rusty car, the latter drives a black Mercedes. Both brothers-in-law are complete opposites and hate each other. During dinner, Didier and Bernard make a bet: to stop smoking for fifteen days, until the next family get-together. The first days go off like a dream and both are on top of the world. But things quickly turn sour. Didier and Bernard find it harder and harder to resist the temptation. They become irritable, suspicious, they lie; until the fifteenth day: the family get-together. They have kept their word, but relations between them and their wives are at an all time low. Despite this, they are both determined to remain non-smokers.
