Chu Tien-wen (Chinese: 朱天文; pinyin: Zhū Tiānwén; born August 24, 1956 in Taipei, Taiwan) is one of Taiwan's most prominent writers. She is the daughter of Chu Hsi-ning and the older sister of Chu Tien-hsin. Some of her literary works include "Fin-de-Siècle Splendour" (1990) and Notes of a Desolate Man 荒人手記 (1994). She wrote many of the scripts for the famous Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien. Her screenwriting credits include movies like Taipei Story, The Puppetmaster, Goodbye South, Goodbye, Millennium Mambo, City of Sadness 悲情城市 (1989) and many more.

Biography

Chu T’ien-wen (Zhu Tianwen) est un des écrivains les plus importants de Taiwan. Elle est la fille de Chu Hsi-ning (Zhu Xining 朱西宁, 1927-1998), et la sœur de Chu T’ien-hsin (Zhu Tianxin 朱天心, née en 1958), lesquels sont eux aussi des romanciers.

Vers la fin des années 1970, avec sa sœur, elle a créé la revue Sansan jikan (三三季刊), puis les éditions Sansan shufang (三三書坊).

Elle est l’auteur d’une douzaine de livres, recueils de nouvelles et de textes en prose, mais également d’un roman, Huangren shouji (荒人手记), qui a été récompensé en 1994 par le Zhongguo shibao (China Times) et dont il existe une version anglaise, Notes of a Desolate Man (trad. par Howard Goldblatt et Sylvia Li-chun Lin, 1999).

Plusieurs de ses nouvelles ont été traduites en français.

Elle est également scénariste : elle a colloboré à de nombreuses reprises avec le cinéaste taïwanais Hou Hsiao-hsien.

In four elegant brothels, called "Flower Houses", in fin-de-siècle 19th-century Shanghai (Qing dynasty), several affairs are described.
