Maurice Henri Joseph Schérer or Jean Marie Maurice Schérer, known as Éric Rohmer ([eʁik ʁomɛʁ], 21 March 1920 – 11 January 2010), was a French film director, film critic, journalist, novelist, screenwriter and teacher.

Rohmer was the last of the post-World War II, French New Wave directors to become established. He edited the influential film journal, Cahiers du cinéma, from 1957 to 1963, while most of his colleagues – among them Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut – were making the transition from film critics to filmmakers and gaining international attention.

Biography

Enfance et adolescence
Maurice Schérer naît le 21 mars 1920 à Tulle en Corrèze, deux ans avant son frère, le futur philosophe René Schérer. Il est scolarisé à l'école élémentaire Sévigné à Tulle puis au lycée Edmond-Perrier. Il obtient son baccalauréat en mathématiques et en philosophie en 1937. Dès son enfance, il est déjà un grand lecteur et apprécie notamment Jules Verne, la comtesse de Ségur ou encore Erckmann et Chatrian. Il pratique aussi le dessin et la peinture et surtout le théâtre.

En septembre 1937, Maurice Schérer est admis en hypokhâgne au lycée Henri-IV à Paris.
