Erich Wolf Segal (June 16, 1937 – January 17, 2010) was an American author, screenwriter, and educator. He was best known for writing the novel Love Story (1970), a best-seller, and writing the motion picture of the same name, which was a major hit.

Biography

Né à Brooklyn en 1937, Erich Segal fait ses études au Harvard College et à l'Université Harvard où il obtient un doctorat de littérature comparée. Il devient professeur de lettres classiques dans cette même université, puis enseigne à l'Université Yale et à l'Université de Princeton.

Il est essayiste et traducteur de littérature grecque et latine.

Scénariste du film Love Story sorti à la fin de l’année 1970, il novélise son scénario. Conçu au départ comme un simple outil de promotion, ce roman d’amour emblématique fut un best-seller avant la sortie du film lui-même. Aujourd’hui traduit en plus d’une vingtaine de langues, il est publié en français chez J’ai lu, qui en a tiré 300 000 exemplaires depuis 1987.

Suivent Oliver's Story en 1972 (au cinéma en 1978), Un homme, une femme, un enfant en 1980, La Classe en 1986, Docteurs et Actes de foi.

Il s'installe plus tard à Londres et enseigne au Wolfson College de l'Université d'Oxford.

Il meurt d'une crise cardiaque dans sa maison de Londres le 17 janvier 2010 et est inhumé le 19 janvier.

Indu (Shabana Azmi) and DK (Naseeruddin Shah) have a happy marriage and two daughters — Rinky and Minni — and live in Delhi. Bhavana did not tell DK about their son as she did not want to disturb DK's matrimonial life. Now that she has died, her guardian Masterji sends word to DK informing him that his son, Rahul (Jugal Hansraj), who is eight years old, needs a home. Despite the objections of Indu, who is devastated to learn of her husband's infidelity, DK brings the boy to stay with them in Delhi. Rahul is never told that DK is his father as he bonds with DK and his daughters. But Indu can't bear to look at him, a tangible reminder of DK's betrayal.
