Esther Howard (4 April 1892 – 8 March 1965) was a stage and film character actress who played a wide range of supporting roles, from man-hungry spinsters to amoral criminals, appearing in 108 films in her 23-year career.

Biography

D'abord actrice de théâtre, Esther Howard joue notamment à Broadway (New York) entre 1917 et 1929, dans cinq pièces, six comédies musicales et une revue. Citons la pièce L'Élévation d'Henri Bernstein (1917, avec Lionel Atwill et Alison Skipworth) et la comédie musicale Wildflower , sur une musique d'Herbert Stothart et Vincent Youmans (1923-1924, avec Charles Judels et Olin Howland).

Après ce passage à Broadway, elle poursuit sa carrière au cinéma (comme second rôle de caractère ou dans des petits rôles non crédités), avec cent-neuf films américains sortis entre 1930 et 1952, dont plusieurs réalisations de Preston Sturges.

Hot-headed Winifred "Freddie" Jones (Betty Grable) is a saloon singer in the Old West who catches her boyfriend, gambler Blackie Jobero (Cesar Romero), flirting with another woman and takes a shot at him with the six-shooter she always carries. After sustaining a head wound in combat, decorated World War II veteran Eddie Rice (John Payne) is treated at a San Francisco military hospital for a permanent form of amnesia. Successful author Christopher "Kit" Madden (Claudette Colbert) travels to Los Angeles to work on the film adaptation of her best-selling book Here is Tomorrow. It is supposed to star Cary Grant as the hero Mark Winston and Lana Turner, but Grant has just dropped out and the producer thinks they need an unknown actor to play Winston. On a train to Hollywood Kit meets two Marines, Captain "Rusty" Thomas (John Wayne) and 1st Lieutenant "Dink" Watson (Don DeFore). She considers Rusty the best choice to play Mark Winston, but he is dismissive of her book: she wrote a political allegory and he does not believe Cary Grant would refuse Lana Turner for 400 pages. Unsure how he will react if he discovers she is a famous writer, she keeps her identity secret (saying her name is "Kitty Kloch"). During their journey across the country on trains, the trio end up in various comedic and dramatic situations. When Rusty finally learns the truth, he thinks that she has been using him just so he would be in the motion picture. Nonetheless, after a number of missteps, the couple eventually are able to resolve their differences.
