Francis Henry Durbridge, né le 25 novembre 1912 à Hull (Royaume-Uni), décédé le 11 avril 1998 à Barnes en Londres, (Royaume-Uni), est un scénariste et un auteur britannique de roman policier et de roman d'espionnage.

Biography

Après des études à l'Université de Birmingham, il est brièvement agent de change avant de devenir écrivain professionnel. Il acquiert la notoriété avec des pièces et des feuilletons radio, notamment la série de l'écrivain détective Paul Temple. Plusieurs récits de la série radiophonique Paul Temple seront ensuite publiés sous forme de roman. Durbridge utilisera également le nom Paul Temple comme pseudonyme pour quelques titres.

Durbridge amorce en parallèle une carrière de dramaturge pour la scène et de scénariste au cinéma et surtout à la télévision à partir du milieu des années 1950. Trois mini-séries télévisées ont été produites à partir de son roman Melissa.

Doctor Howard Latimer answers what he believes to be a request for a favour from an American friend by picking up a famous German actress from London Airport. He goes in the company of a journalist Geoffrey Windsor who tags along after failing to gain an interview with Latimer about recent medical research. As Latimer is already late for a date with his fiancee at the Royal Festival Hall he lets Windsor take the actress to Claridges Hotel.

The film opens with a car plunging over a cliff in Italy. The killed driver is newspaperman Lewis Forrester. The woman with him is supposedly Alison Ford, an actress. But she wasn’t actually in the car and turns up later in England to try and solve what was in truth a murder to shut the newspaper man up, not an accident. She solicits the help of Forrester's brother, Tim, an artist. Then, as the story unfolds, a number of mysterious, unsolved questions keep emerging, along with two more murders and a suicide. And before it's over it has been learned that an international ring of diamond thieves is at the bottom of everything, that no less than four of the major characters are part of it, and that an independent blackmailer is at work as well.
