Frank Campeau (December 14, 1864 – November 5, 1943) was an American actor. He appeared in 93 films between 1911 and 1940 and made many appearances in films starring Douglas Fairbanks. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.

Biography

Frank Campeau entame sa carrière d'acteur au théâtre et joue notamment à Broadway (New York) dans quatre pièces, la première en 1904, la dernière en 1916. Entretemps, mentionnons Believe Me, Xantippe en 1913, avec John Barrymore, Henry Hull, Theodore Roberts et Mary Young.

Au cinéma, il contribue à quatre-vingt-quinze films américains (y compris trente-neuf westerns), dont une soixantaine muets, le premier étant le court métrage Kit Carson's Wooing de Francis Boggs, avec Jack Conway, sorti en 1911.

En particulier, il apparaît dans trois films muets de John Ford, Le Pionnier de la baie d'Hudson (1923, avec Tom Mix et Kathleen Key), La Tornade (1923, avec David Butler et Gladys Hulette) et Trois sublimes canailles (1926, avec George O'Brien et Olive Borden).

In Vienna, 15-year-old Marie Antoinette (Norma Shearer) is informed by her mother, Empress Marie Therese of Austria (Alma Kruger), that Marie is to marry the future King of France, the Dauphin Louis XVI (Robert Morley). The young princess is excited to meet her future husband and live as a queen, but the Dauphin she married is actually a shy man, more at home with locksmithing than attending parties at the court at Versailles. After they are married, Marie tries desperately to please her husband, and after some trepidation, the Dauphin realizes he can trust Marie and tells her he cannot produce heirs. Without children to occupy her time and attention, Marie is bored and associates with the power-hungry Duc d'Orleans (Joseph Schildkraut), even though the Dauphin does not like him.

A prospector heading for the Alaska gold fields loses most of his money gambling. His luck changes when he pays $250 for a sled dog to keep him from being shot by an arrogant Englishman, who is also headed for the Yukon. Victor Varconi is a Mexican bandit who brazenly flaunts his ventures until the people of El Paramo demand that something be done about it. Charles Judles, the Mexican sheriff, offers a large reward for the capture of Varconi. Meanwhile, a pair of lovers, played by Fay Wray and Don Alvarado are disappointed when Wray's father Alvarado request to marry his daughter. Wray's father has his eye on a wealthy gringo, played by Robert Elliott, and wants his daughter to marry him. When Alvarado hears about the large reward for Varconi he sets out for the bandit in the hopes of getting the money so that he can be wealthy enough to please her father and marry Wray. Judles decides to light bonfires at points where the bandit is seen in the hopes of capturing him. When Varconi shows up at Wray hacienda to pay homage to her, she, at first, lights a bonfire. She subsequently changes her mind and hides Varconi from the soldiers when they arrive. At daybreak, Alvarado captures Varconi, in the hopes of getting the reward money. He turns him in and gets the reward money and prepares for the wedding. Varconi soon escapes from prison, to the embarrassment of Judles. At this point Elliot asks Varconi to perform a favor which he had promised him on a previous occasion. Elliot tells Varconi to break up the wedding so that he can marry Wray himself. Immediately after Wray is married by force she retires to her room. A gunshot is then heard. Wray returns to the party where Varconi informs her that she is now a widow and is free to marry Alvarado.
