The film opens in St. Louis, Missouri, on Lutie Cameron's (Katharine Hepburn) wedding day. She has had a short courtship with a cattle rancher of New Mexico. As she dresses, she receives a telegram from her fiancé Col. Brewton (Spencer Tracy) telling her to board the train for New Mexico to marry him in the small town of Salt Fork. The first person she meets in town is Brice Chamberlain (Melvyn Douglas), who warns her of likely unhappiness with Brewton, locally considered a tyrant. He takes her to the courthouse, where she sees Brewton testifying against a settler who had tried to stake a claim to part of the government-owned land where Brewton runs his cattle.

Dan Alton (Hoot Gibson) is a con artist, posing as a lawyer in order to sell copies of a phony law book. When Bill Clary (Jack Rutherford) robs a stagecoach, and plants some of the stolen money at the ranch of Luke Avery (Fred Gilman), Avery's sister beautiful sister Ruth (Sheila Bromley) ropes an instantly smitten Alton into being Avery's defense attorney. As part of his strategy to defend Avery, Alton plans to pull off another stagecoach robbery.

Jim Wright et Skeeter Burke sont engagés pour participer au rodéo organisé par le Colonel Ben Hall. Ce dernier offre 1 000 $ pour la capture de Devil, un cheval sauvage, pour qu'il soit la principale attraction du spectacle. Jim et Skeeter capturent le cheval, mais Gil Baker le vole et tue Skeeter dans la bagarre qui s'ensuit. Le shérif trouve Jim près du corps de Skeeter et l'arrête pour le meurtre. Sur le chemin vers la prison, quelqu'un tire sur le shérif et le blesse, Jim le transporte alors en ville et réussit à s'échapper. Il retourne voir le colonel et découvre que Baker se targue d'avoir capturé Devil. Jim raconte alors au colonel et à sa fille Alice ce qui s'est passé et ils le cachent. La publicité pour le rodéo annonçait Baker comme cavalier de Devil mais, lorsqu'il reconnaît Jim, il s'enfuit. Pour sauver le spectacle, Jim monte le cheval, mais il est reconnu et arrêté. Il arrive à s'évader de prison, mais le shérif, croyant à son innocence, ne le poursuit pas. Jim capture Baker et sauve ainsi sa réputation.
