Gary J. Garland (born October 12, 1957), also known as Gary Houston, is a former professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played one season with the Nuggets (the 1979–80 season). Garland studied at DePaul University. He is the son of gospel singer Cissy Houston, and the half-brother of Michael Houston and Whitney Houston. He is the uncle of Bobbi Kristina Brown, Whitney's daughter with Bobby Brown. Garland himself has performed as a singer.

The main hero, Danila Bagrov (Sergey Bodrov Jr.), comes to Moscow because he wants to study medicine and become a doctor. He goes to the building of TV6-MOSCOW, a local Russian TV channel, where he has been invited to appear on a Russian TV show, "In the world of people." On the show, Danila is interviewed along with his former comrades Ilya Setevoy (Kirill Pirogov) and Konstantin Gromov (Alexander Dyachenko). Danila's mother and his older brother Viktor (Viktor Sukhorukov), ex-gangster and now a policeman, see the TV-Show on their TV. Ms. Bagrova, the mother of Viktor and Danila, is unhappy with Viktor because he is drinking vodka all the time and is unable to help her. She mentions to him that his brother is on TV in Moscow, and that Viktor should drive to him and get a real job. She tells him that he should ask his brother for help. But Viktor just screws his brother, telling that his mother will be fine.

Minneapolis car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is desperate for money. Shep Proudfoot (Steve Reevis), an ex-convict, gives him a name; he travels to Fargo, North Dakota, where he hires two men (Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare)) to kidnap his wife, Jean (Kristin Rudrüd), and ransom her for $80,000, knowing his wealthy father-in-law and boss, Wade Gustafson (Harve Presnell) will pay. In return, Lundegaard will give Showalter and Grimsrud a new 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, and half of the ransom money.

L'historien Jean Martin (Sacha Guitry) raconte à sa jeune épouse Françoise (Jacqueline Delubac) l'histoire fabuleuse d'un collier composé de sept perles fines, jadis offert par le pape Clément VII (Ermete Zacconi) à sa nièce Catherine de Médicis (Paulette Elambert), quelques mois avant le mariage de cette dernière avec le futur Henri II... Quatre des perles, remises à Élisabeth I (Yvette Pienne) peu après l'exécution de Marie Stuart (Jacqueline Delubac) ornent désormais les arceaux de la couronne royale britannique, mais les trois dernières ont mystérieusement disparu. Jean Martin décide alors de partir en quête des joyaux manquants, imité en cela par un officier de la Maison royale anglaise (Lyn Harding) et un camérier du pape (Enrico Glori).
