Geeta Bali (1930 – 21 January 1965) was a popular film actress from Bollywood.

Biography

They lived in Amritsar before 1947. Her father, Kartar Singh, known as Philosopher, was blind. He was a Sikh scholar and kirtan (Sikh devotional music) singer. Her maternal grandfather, Takhat Singh (1870-1937), was the founder of Sikh Kanya Mahavidyalay - a boarding school for girls and the first of its kind established in 1904 in Ferozepur. The parents encouraged their daughters, Harkirtan (Geeta Bali) and Hardarshan, to learn classical music and dance, horse riding and gatka fencing. Fundamentalist Sikhs socially boycotted the family as they did not like the girls performing in public and they picketed theatres. On 23 August 1955 Geeta married Shammi Kapoor, with whom she was working in the film Coffee House. They had two children, a son (Aditya Raj Kapoor) and a daughter (Kanchan).

She died on 21 January 1965, having contracted smallpox while shooting a Punjabi film, Rano, based on a novel Eik Chadar Maili Si by Rajinder Singh Bedi. He was directing the film and she was the producer. Bedi, devastated by the untimely death of Bali, abandoned the project. He wrote later that he had put the novel on her burning funeral pyre.

She is the aunt of Yogeeta Bali.shammi kapoor married to neela devi after her death.

Gulu Lala lives a middle-classed lifestyle along with his parents in Chinchpokli, Bombay. Believing himself to be Hindustani and speaking Hindi, he is unable to secure employment with Parsi, Sindhi, Marwari, and Tamil businessmen, and spends his time walking a stray dog, Charlie, along Marine Drive. One day he comes to the rescue of Sindhi-speaking wealthy businessman, Rai Bahadur Himmatchand and his snobbish daughter, Bembi, who initially 'borrow' Charlie and then Gullu himself to live in their mansion. Dilip (Sohrab Modi is a kind-hearted prison warden (Jailor), who lives with his wife Kanwal (Kamini Kaushal) and little daughter Bali (Daisy Irani). Kanwal enjoys herself by staying out late at parties and meeting people. She equates her life in the house as a jail. Dilip tells her that her life is within the four walls of the house, and orders her not to go out without his permission. Kanwal hates the scar on her husband’s face and taunts Dilip about his ugly looks. Kanwal finally elopes with Dr Ramesh leaving her daughter behind. This turns Dilip into a hard cruel man who becomes oppressive. Kanwal and Dr. Ramesh go through hardships with Ramesh turning blind and Kanwal becoming disfigured following an accident. Dilip goes to the hospital and brings Kanwal back home. He has her locked up in her room forbidding her to meet her daughter. His constant taunts and berating compel Kanwal to commit suicide. Bali falls sick and dies.

Destiny moulds its own way. When Thakur Mahendra Singh adopted a child his wife gave him the happy news that she is going to be a mother herself. Kamla (Geeta Bali) lives a poor lifestyle in a small town in Uttar Pradesh along with her widowed dad, Dinanath, who works as an accountant, and two younger brothers, Kumar and Kishore. Her father's biggest dream is to get Kamla married to her lover, a wealthy man named Prem (Balraj Sahni), and ensure that Kumar and Kishore get properly educated. As Dinanath's eyesight becomes very weak, the quality of his work deteriorates and he loses his job. However, his employer, Laxmidas (Madan Puri), promises to hire Dinanath's son Kumar once he completes his education. On the day of the results, Kumar tragically passes away in an accident. Devastated and desperate, Dinanath tries to commit suicide, but he is hospitalised. Later he recovers but loses his vision completely. Kamla's wedding is consequently cancelled, and Prem reluctantly gets married to a woman named Shyama. Kamla starts working and takes it upon herself to look after her dad and Kishore. Years pass by, Kishore (Rajendra Kumar) has grown up, graduates, gets a job and marries a young girl named Tara (Neelma), who happens ro be the niece of Kashiram, Prem's friend. The family settles down to a fairly harmonious relationship which is shattered when Kishore and Tara accuse Kamla of stealing household items; following this incident, Kamla and her dad leave the house, and Kamla soon gets a job as a nurse for a sick Shyama, while her husband Prem is absent, without knowing that she is actually her ex-lover's wife.

Ganga (Geeta Bali is a comes from a poor family and lives with her father, sister Madhu, and brother Pappu. When her father is unable to pay the Rs. 1000 dowry money to the bridegroom at Ganga's wedding, the marriage is called off by the groom's family. Desperate, Ganga's father resorts to stealing the money from a man who is subsequently killed. The blame for the murder falls on Ganga's father who is arrested. The three siblings try to eke out a living by doing odd jobs. Pappu meets with an accident when he gets hit by Kamal's (Shammi Kapoor) car. Kamal helps the family and Ganga starts working as a night club dancer and goes by the name, Miss Coca Cola. Kamal and Ganga fall in love and together they try to find the real killer. Eventually they succeed and Ganga's father is freed.

Geeta and Rita are sisters of Mr. Verma, the owner of Nan Ching Chung hotel. Rita is in love with Brij and Geeta helps her elope and get married. Geeta is infatuated by Pradeep, a singer and musician. When she finds out he is in town she makes several attempts to meet him but fails. Pradeep meets Geeta when she is helping Rita elope and in some scuffle and misunderstanding he thinks Geeta is trying to escape some people out to get her. He helps take her to the police station where she claims to have been abducted by Pradeep himself. Mr. Verma arrives and fed up with his daughters antics he sends them to another town where they enroll in a school to learn music. The music teacher is Pradeep, a fact Geeta knew from before. She again helps her sister to go off on her honeymoon with her husband, while pretending to be Rita to keep up pretenses of her still being at the academy. Her masquerade leads to several funny situations in the film. Eventually the situation unravels, the father accepts Rita's wedding and Geeta and Pradeep are united.

The 16th century, the Malabar Coast. General Barbosa (KN Singh) signs a treaty with the queen (Sulochana) of a small state giving the Portuguese right to trade in exchange for military protection. With the help of the queen's nephew Jaswant (Ramsingh), he begins to meddle in the administration as well. He arrests merchant Ramzan Ali and his friend Narayan Das. Das' daughter Nisha (Geeta Bali) tries to save her father but is caught by Barbosa and both are sold to a cruel Portuguese pirate Cabral. Cabral kills Narayan Das. Nisha rouses her fellow slaves to revolt against Cabral and once Cabral is killed Nisha becomes a pirate queen pillaging all Portuguese ships in sight. One such ship includes heir to the throne Prince Ravi (Guru Dutt), a Portuguese woman Rosita (Kuldip Kaur) and a court astrologer (Johnny Walker). Nisha spares their lives as Ravi had saved her life earlier. They inevitably fall in love. Ravi joins the mutineers without revealing his identity. Back on shore, Ravi learns Jaswant is to be crowned king. Ravi is arrested and sentenced to death. Nisha saves him and they join forces with other local chiefs to defeat Barbosa.
