Hartney J. Arthur (29 December 1917 – 28 April 2004) was an Australian actor, writer and film director, who worked in stage, radio and film.

Biography

He was born in Hobart Tasmania, and appeared as a convict boy in For the Term of his Natural Life (1927). He went into work in Sydney radio and theater as a writer, director and actor, and toured New Zealand in the title role of Charley's Aunt. He later directed Peter Finch in Red Sky at Morning (1944) and managed a chain of theaters in New South Wales.

In 1949 he moved to the U.S.A and worked for the Australian Information Bureau and as a theater and film agent.

Two journalists in New York, American Headlines Haggerty (Al Thomas) and Englishman Clarence Worthington (Hartney Arthur) are sent to cover the war in the South Pacific. They get marooned on the Australian coast along with two rival female reporters after a Japanese sub sinks their boat. They are rescued by a girl who lives on the island with her father, Horace. Together they all uncover and stop a plot by the Japanese to invade Australia.

After a row, Ellinor Devine reveals to her husband Sir Richard that he is not actually the father of their son, also named Richard, but that he was fathered by her cousin, Lord Bellasis. Sir Richard throws his son out and storms off in a rage. Shortly afterwards, Richard Junior finds his biological father dead in the forest. Only the viewer and an unidentified witness know that Lord Bellasis has actually been killed by his own son, known as John Rex. However, it is Richard Devine who is found next to the body and arrested. Thinking that his father killed Bellasis, Richard wants to protect his mother's reputation and gives his name as Rufus Dawes.
