Actor Herbert Butterfield (October 28, 1895 - May 2, 1957) was best known for his work in American radio. Perhaps his major role on radio was that of The Commissioner in Dangerous Assignment.

Butterfield acted dozens of roles on Broadway is My Beat. His other roles in radio programs included: Rex Kramer on Dan Harding's Wife, Ziehm in Girl Alone, Clarence Wellman in The Halls of Ivy, Weissoul in Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy, Preacher Jim in Kitty Keene, Inc., Judge Carter Colby in Lonely Women, Phineas Herringbone in Ma Perkins, Judge Glenn Hunter in One Man's Family, and Judge Colby in Today's Children. He also was the last actor to play Inspector Richard Queen in The Adventures of Ellery Queen on radio.

Butterfield's limited activity on television included reprising his roles of Clarence Wellman in The Halls of Ivy and The Commissioner in Dangerous Assignment. He appeared on the television series Dragnet in 1955, on the episode titled, The Big Family under the screen name, Herb Butterfield. He also had roles in a few movies, including The House on Telegraph Hill and Shield for Murder.

Lieutenant Barney Nolan (Edmond O'Brien), a 16-year veteran of the police force, has had enough. In a secluded alley late one night, he fatally shoots a bookmaker in the back and steals the $25,000 he was carrying. He then claims the man was killed trying to escape custody. Sergeant Mark Brewster (John Agar), his friend and partner, believes him, as does the Captain of Detectives, Captain Gunnarson (Emile Meyer). Viktoria Kowalska (Valentina Cortese) has lost her home and her husband in the German occupation of Poland, and has been imprisoned in the concentration camp at Belsen. She befriends another prisoner, Karin Dernakova (Natasha Lytess), who dreams of reuniting with her young son Christopher (Gordon Gebert), who was sent to live in San Francisco with a wealthy Aunt. Karin dies shortly before the camp can be liberated, and Viktoria, seeing a way to a better life, uses Karin's papers to assume her identity. After the camp is liberated, she is interviewed by Major Marc Bennett (William Lundigan), who gets her a place in a camp for persons displaced by the war. She writes to Karin's Aunt Sophia in San Francisco, but receives a cable from Sophia's lawyers that she has died.
