Holeg Spies is a French-born composer, music producer and multisensory creator best known for his collaboration in film music with Patrick Savage as Savage & Spies.
Before his career in film music, Spies was best known as a leader and pioneer in the fusion of musical styles in the indie-music world. Experienced in international collaborations, Holeg Spies has constantly explored cultures and sound-worlds to forge his own unique and unconventional style. From indie-rock to electronica through world and classical music, Holeg worked with major record companies such as Universal Japan, BMG and Polygram. Since 1993, Holeg Spies has composed and produced a massive amount of music pieces under several names: Holeg Spies, Spies, Spies Under Von Magnet Influence, Crossfinger, The Star Shrink Shooters and for other artists and labels such as Anne Clark, Citizen aka Vitalic, Von Magnet among others.
In 2012, Holeg Spies and singer/song writer Ariel Electron foundeded Kore Kosmou. A creative duo in collaboration with an international collective of established and charismatic musicians such as guitarist Thierry Gotti, guitarist Jon Klein (Siouxsie & The Banshees), guitarist East Bay Ray (The Dead Kennedys), composer and virtuoso violinist Patrick Savage among others.
Trained at the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA), Holeg created the avant-garde, multi-media "Spies" art installation in the mid 90's with director Thierry Saint-Paul and Alexandra Mercier. Together, they also developed the installation, "Notinism" which toured the world as far afield as India and Japan, showing at venues such as the National Museum of Modern Art of France (Pompidou Centre), the Canon Urban Lenz Exhibition in Tokyo and contemporary art exhibitions in Europe and New York. The "notinism" has been considered as a new form of surrealism merging a musical field of vision and video paintings with a mysterious crypted website. The "notinism" stigmatises all form of artistical, religious, political, ethnic segmentations. In the continuity, Holeg developed multisensory installations merging automatic and ritual paintings with music. American curator David d'Heilly wrote: "SPIES' work transmits a vast rosetta stone facilitating communication between the world of ancient thaumaturgical wisdom and our current network society".
In Japan where he toured and provided art installations frequently over a 10-year period (1997-2007) having been introduced by Mike Maguire (Juno Reactor), he met director Miike Takashi in 2002. SPIES scored an exclusive 4' trailer for his award-winning movie Ichi the Killer and decided then to concentrate his musical composition for films. Holeg got started in the American film industry with his contribution to the theatrical trailer of Michael Bay's Hitcher Hitcher. In 2006, he met Patrick Savage and together created the Savage & Spies composer-duo.
In 2011, as a composer for films, Holeg Spies joined ICM Partners alongside a stable of film luminaries that includes Ennio Morricone, Al Pacino as well as music superstars Beyoncé, Eminem and Lou Reed.
