Itzik Kol (Hebrew: איציק קול‎; January 12, 1932 – July 8, 2007) was an Israeli television and film producer considered by many to be a pioneer and originator of Israeli cinema. He died following complications from pneumonia.

Biography

Itzik was born in Petach Tikva, Israel, the only child of Tova Rosset, a Polish immigrant, and Shalom Kolker, a Ukrainian immigrant who worked as a union organizer and fought for Arab-Israeli rights. As a child, Itzik trained to be a classical violinist at the urging of his mother. Despite noticeable talent, his interests shifted to politics and socialism during his adolescence and young adulthood when he became a prominent leader in the Israeli youth movement, Hashomer Hatzair. His idealism and pioneering spirit led him, along with others, to found and establish Kibbutz Nachshon, a collective community based on an agricultural economy. There, Itzik married Noemi Glass and officially changed his last name from Kolker to Kol as a mark of independence. They bore two children: Ayelet Kol Engelman (born 1953) and Shahar Kol (born 1956). Itzik left Kibbutz Nachshon in 1960.

Itzik resided in Israel throughout his life, except for a 4-year period (1991–1994) when he lived in Mount Olympus, Los Angeles, California. In 1982, Itzik divorced Noemi Kol and married his second wife, Hadassa Degani, in 1991. They adopted a daughter two years later, Gabriella Kol (born 1993). In 2002, Itzik divorced Hadassa and married his third wife, a Colombian interior designer, Sarita Shalev in 2004.

In the last three years of his life, Itzik was involved in the production of herbal remedies designed to treat children with Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD). He was instrumental in bringing one particular herbal remedy to the public market and actively promoted its effectiveness via print, radio, and television.

Amitz Dolniker, an aging Israeli Parliament member known for his high-winded babbling and tireless lecturing, is told he needs to take a break from politics after he collapses during a speech. Fainting, he starts out on a dream trip to spend some weeks in a far-away, backward Israeli village that has little contact with civilization. The farmers’ bucolic and carefree life repels him at first (and especially the fact that they have never heard of him), but then he decides to introduce some “order” to the innocent society. As none of the villagers agree to become the village head (they don’t want the trouble), Dolniker hires a local horse and buggy and puts it at the service of the village barber, declaring him village head “de facto”. The barber objects at first, but as he becomes used to the perks that come along with the position, his grip on power tightens. This leads to a rivalry with other villagers (especially the cobbler) who think themselves equally worthy of becoming the village head (with free horse-and-buggy, of course), which is what Dolniker has expected. He suggests an election to determine the leader. The result, however, bears no resemblance to the orderly political process he is used to, and Dolniker finds himself entangled in silly power struggles, taxes imposed on 3-door closets, corruption, petty bureaucracy, and a ruination of the simple way of life the village once knew. Dolniker comes back to his senses, mildly laughing about himself.

Officer Avraham Azoulay is a patrolman in Tel-Aviv's district of Jaffa. He is an honest man, though extremely naive, and because of his character, has never been promoted during his twenty years in the force. He is married to a dull woman (played by veteran actress Zaharira Harifai); the couple have no children.
