Dr. Jabbar Patel (Marathi: डॉ.जब्बार पटेल) (born 23 June 1942, Pandharpur) is a theatre and film director of India. His production of the play Vijay Tendulkar's play Ghashiram Kotwal, in 1973 is considered a classic in Modern Indian Theatre.

He is the maker of classics films in Marathi cinema, like, Samna (film) Jait Re Jait (Mohan Agashe, Smita Patil), Umbartha (Smita Patil, Girish Karnad), Simhasan (Nana Patekar, Shreeram Lagoo, Reema Lagoo) Some of his other films are, Mukta, Ek Hota Vidushak, and Musafir(Hindi). His most acclaimed film is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar released in 1999. He won the 1995 Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration for his Marathi film, Mukta.

Biography

Born in 1942 in Pandharpur in Maharashtra, having taken primary and secondary education in Haribhai Deokaran Highschool Solapur, he was at first a paediatrician. He founded the Marathi experimental theatre group, 'Theatre Academy', which staged Vijay Tendulkar's Ghashiram Kotwal in 1973, followed by, 'Teen Paishacha Tamasha', an adaptation of Brecht's Threepenny Opera in 1974. He is a writer and has written for the film 'Aagey se right'. He wrote the lyrics of the song 'Raya asa dhondu naka angala' from the film 'Samna'. He has worked on the film based on the life and work of Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.

For Jabbar Patel, tackling a political subject is not something new. Whether it was Umbartha, Jait Re Jait, or Simhasan for the silver screen, or Ghasiram Kotwal for the stage, he has handled political subjects.

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, his film biopic on the National leader who fought also for dalits, which has been in the making for the past nine years, is now seeing the light of the day. The film which fetched Malayalam superstar Mammooty a National award in 1999, however took a while to reach the audience. After the English version received the award, Patel said "the decision was taken to go in for different dubbing versions. It was decided to dub the film in eight languages. So it needed time to write the script, go for script approval from prominent Sahitya Akademi winners,". That entailed going for dubbing teams and a series of voice trials. Mammooty is doing the Malayalam and Tamil dubbing but not the Hindi.

Daughter of a Marathi poet settled in United States, Mukta returns to her ancestral home when she gets a post-graduate scholarship to study sociology. She lives with her grandfather, Abasaheb Kanase-Patil, a veteran of Maharashtra's co-operative movement. At the university she joins a street theatre group of Dalit activists and is drawn to the group's leader Milind Wagh, a fearless student leader and poet. Family's unease increases when her friend from America Julian arrives. Julian, however, wins over her grandfather accompanying him to a pilgrimage to Pandharpur. The old man recalling Marathi Saint poets’ struggle against caste inequalities is complemented by Julian singing of songs associated with the struggle against the racial discrimination in US.

Film begins with Aburao (Laxmikant Berde), a famous film-star in Maharashtra, performing death rituals (Śrāddha) for his mother, Manjula (Madhu Kambikar) in his hometown Begadewadi. As these rituals are usually performed with the shaved head, Aburao is forced to do it by wearing a wig so that he does not lose on the continuity of his films currently being shot. Sulabha Mahajan (played by Smita Patil) is a woman who dreams to step out of the four walls of the house, assume greater responsibility as a citizen and play an important role in shaping the society. She has passion to do something constructive for the abused, assaulted, neglected and traumatized womenfolk of the society she lives in. She gets a job offer as Superintendent of a Women's Reformatory Home in a remote town of Sangamwadi. The story revolves around a tribal caste called the Thakar. Nagya (Mohan Agashe) is a drummer who has a passion for being a "pure one" (punyavant). He meets Chindhi (Smita Patil), who has abandoned her husband as she considers him useless. They both fall in love and strive hard to be united. Once when Nagya goes to jungle for wood-cutting, a queen honey bee attacks him and one of his eyes is injured. He decides to take revenge. The beehives are located high on a nearby difficult to climb peak {Lingoba}. He decides to cut all the beehives so that the queen-bee runs away. Meanwhile, Chindhi becomes pregnant with Nagya, but she still supports his dangerous attempt to climb the peak. Nagya then climbs the peak and cuts the hives. Chindhi is waiting at the base of the peak, but the disturbed honey-bees attack her and she dies in the incident. Nagya, in search of Queen honey-bee, loses his own queen[wife] in the end. This is a classic paradox, where he succeeds (Jait re jait, means WIN-WIN) in his revenge, but loses wife.

The play begins with an invocation to lord Ganesha. Then the Brahmins of Pune introduce themselves and we can see the morally corrupt state of affairs in Pune. Nana Phadnavis who is the Diwan (Chief Secretary) of Pune is also corrupt and visits the lavani dancer. Ghashiram is working with the lavani dancer. Ghashiram being a Brahmin goes to collect alms at the Peshwa's festival the next day. However he is ill-treated there and is charged with pick-pocketing and imprisoned for the offence. He then decides to take revenge.
