Jane Isbell (May 1, 1927 – October 19, 1981)
was a minor actress, bit player and extra who appeared in some major films produced during Hollywood's Golden Era in the 1930s-40s.

Biography

She was born Clarita Jane Isbell in Meridian, Mississippi, the daughter of Theodore Clark Isbell and Elizabeth (Gully) Isbell. Her father was a Vaudeville performer, her mother a granddaughter of Chief Justice George Washington Stone (1811–1894) of the Alabama Supreme Court. Clark Isbell's great-great-grandfather was a colorful Revolutionary War soldier who once saved the life of Andrew Jackson.

The Isbells moved to Los Angeles when Jane was an infant. The elder of two sisters, she began modeling and appearing as an extra in films when only four years old. In 1932, she made her first Mickey McGuire comedy starring Mickey Rooney and would eventually make five films in the Mickey McGuire series, similar to the Our Gang films. She grew up with child stars for playmates and was among those tested for the role of Bonnie Butler in Gone with the Wind. She and Ann Gillis were best friends, working in several films together, usually with Gillis the featured player and Isbell an extra, stand-in or understudy. She was Gillis' understudy and stand-in for long shots on both Little Orphan Annie and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, appearing as an extra in some scenes. She wrote her first article at age twelve, a piece published in Screen Book magazine (April 1939) about Mickey Rooney. She worked with him again in 1944 in National Velvet.

She graduated high school in 1944, Franklin High School in Highland Park, Los Angeles, with special dramatic coaching, and studied art and journalism under John Morley. She appeared on several magazine covers, more often from her modeling work than acting, such as the cover of the Farm Journal and Farmer's Wife magazine in 1944. She also appeared in The Robert King Hollywood Hair Design Book (1948).

She married 11-29-1947 (Las Vegas) Lt. Jack Marvin Althouse, an investment banker and former Navy lieutenant (12 Apr 1919 – 12 Sept 2000). Her parents had kept her true age a secret, so newspaper articles at the time of her marriage claimed she was only seventeen years old although nearly twenty. These press statements ignored an earlier columnist who had leaked in the Los Angeles Evening Herald-Express that she would turn 18 on Apr. 31, 1945. Various newspaper articles mentioned that she was a cousin of ballplayers Frank Isbell of the Chicago White Sox and Cecil Isbell.

Several internet databases, including the IMDB and Flixster, have confused her with Frank Isbell's niece Jane who was born in Sedgwick, Kansas, September 12, 1927, and who also died in Los Angeles, unmarried, but was never an actress.

Jane Isbell's biggest roles were in forgettable B-movies, but as an extra she appeared in some of Hollywood's biggest successes, such as National Velvet (starring Elizabeth Taylor), Sergeant York (starring Gary Cooper), The Women (Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell), Broadway Rhythm, The Thin Man Goes Home (William Powell and Myrna Loy), Little Orphan Annie, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Frequently seen in the same frame with Hollywood's top stars, her face often appears in movie stills from a number of famous feature films. In Billy Wilder's The Major and the Minor, she was one of the wallflower girls doing Veronica Lake imitations, often called the funniest scene in this classic comedy.

National Velvet is the story of a 12-year-old girl, Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor), who lives in the small town of Sewels in Sussex, England, who wins a spirited gelding in a raffle and decides to train him for the Grand National steeplechase. She is aided by a penniless young drifter named Mi (or Michael) Taylor (Mickey Rooney), who found Mrs. Brown's name and address among his late father's effects, but is unaware of what it was doing there. Hoping to gain some money from the association, Mi stays at the Browns' home, but Mrs. Brown is unwilling to allow Mi to trade on his father's good name and remains vague about how she knew him. Nevertheless she convinces her husband (Donald Crisp) to hire Mi over his better judgment, and Mi is brought into the home as a hired hand. It is revealed that Mi had been a jockey in Manchester, but his career ended in a collision which resulted in the death of another jockey. Since then Mi has not held a job, and he has come to hate horses. Velvet's horse is named "The Pie," short for "Pirate," the epithet given him by his owner due to the horse jumping clear of his paddock and wrecking things in the village. The man decides to be rid of the Pie, and offers him up in a raffle. Velvet wins The Pie, and on realizing the extent of the horses natural talent, she pleads with Mi to train the horse for the Grand National. He believes it a fools errand, not because of the horse, but because they have no real way to support the effort. He makes his case to Mrs. Brown, but she consents to Velvet's desire to train the horse. Velvet and Mi train the horse and enter him into the race. An experienced jockey is hired to ride him. The night before the race Velvet senses that the jockey hired to ride The Pie has no faith in him, and doesn't believe the horse can win. Velvet convinces Mi to fire the jockey, leaving them without a rider. That night Mi determines to overcome his fears and ride The Pie himself. Instead, he discovers that Velvet has slipped on the jockey's colors, and intends to ride the horse in the race herself. Aware of the dangers of such a race, Mi pleads with Velvet but is unable to dissuade her. As the race unfolds Velvet and The Pie avoid a number of falls, clear all the hurdles and win the race. Elated by their win, Velvet faints and falls off her mount at the finish. As she is revived the race doctor realizes she is not a young man, but a young woman. As such she and The Pie are disqualified, but Velvet knows The Pie proved himself. Velvet becomes a media sensation, declining an offer of £5,000 to travel to Hollywood with The Pie to be filmed. She ran the Pie at the Grand National because he deserved to have a chance. He wasn't an oddity to be stared at. In refusing the offer she states simply: "He wouldn't like being looked at." At the close of the film Mi takes his leave, and Mrs. Brown gives Velvet permission to reveal to him the nature of her relationship with his father. Velvet rides off to catch up with Mi and tell him that his father had been Mrs. Brown's coach when she won the prize as the first woman to swim the English Channel, many years before.
