Member of an artist family, Stern is the daughter of actor/producer Tom Stern and Academy award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress Samantha Eggar. Her brother, Nicolas Stern, is a producer for film and television. She married actor Brennan Brown in 1998, and they live in Brooklyn, New York.
Stern graduated from the U.C. Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts and received her Master of Fine Arts from NYU Graduate School.

L’histoire se déroule à Coney Island, une station balnéaire, dans les années 1950. Ginny, une ancienne actrice lunatique devenue serveuse, a refait sa vie avec Humpty, veuf, qui exploite un manège. Ils s’étaient brouillés cinq ans auparavant lorsqu’elle avait épousé un gangster, au désarroi de Humpty. Sans ressources et voulant échapper aux griffes de son mari violent, Caroline se réfugie chez son père, sachant que son mari veut la tuer pour avoir fui et parlé à la police. Si la rancœur des années passées pousse initialement Humpty à rejeter sa fille, au fil des semaines, il adoucit son comportement et cherche désormais à recréer une relation harmonieuse avec elle, entre autres en lui finançant des cours du soir pour qu’elle puisse se relancer dans la vie, au lieu du boulot de serveuse qu’elle exerce temporairement aux côtés de Ginny.

The film opens with Jeff (Neil Patrick Harris) and Sam (Bonnie Somerville) moving from Delaware into New York City with their five-year-old daughter Beatrice. Sam takes Beatrice on visit to several schools in the city to get Beatrice admitted for the current session, only to realize that there is very little prospect in such short period. After losing hope, she enlists help of Sue Lemon (Amy Sedaris), a consultant who helps couples in getting their kids admitted into schools. Matthew (Emory Cohen) is a teenage boy in New York who has therapy together with his father Frank (Steve Schirripa), because of their troubled communication. The boy runs away during their session. Angela (Sharon Angela), his mother, is worried but Frank is more concerned with his radio show, and whether his techs got his vodka. He proceeds to use a great deal of cocaine as well before the show begins. Matthew goes to a park where a lot of homeless people are congregated, where he is picked up by a couple. They give him alcohol and drugs, after which the woman has sex with Matthew while the man watches.

Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) is an alcoholic, burned-out N.Y.P.D. detective. Despite a late shift the night before, his lieutenant orders him to escort a witness, Eddie Bunker (Mos Def), from local custody to the courthouse 16 blocks away to testify on a police corruption case before a grand jury at 10 a.m. Bunker tries to be friendly with Mosley, telling him of his aspirations to move to Seattle to become a cake baker with his sister whom he has never met, but Mosley is uninterested, and stops at a liquor store. They are suddenly ambushed by a gunman, and Mosley drags Bunker to a local bar to take shelter and call for backup. Mosley's former partner, Frank Nugent (David Morse), and several other officers arrive. Nugent and his men have ulterior motives, telling Mosley that Bunker is not worth defending as his testimony will likely out several officers, including Nugent, who are involved in the corruption scheme, and they try to frame Bunker for firing at an officer before they kill him. Mosley intervenes, rescuing Bunker and fleeing.
