Jerome Moross (August 1, 1913 – July 25, 1983) was an American-born composer. During his teenage years, Moross met and became a friend of Bernard Herrmann. The two composers became friends, and their friendship lasted until Herrmann's death. He composed works for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, soloists, musical theatre. He also orchestrated motion picture scores for other composers. He is best known for the excellent quality of his music for film and television.

Biography

He was born in New York City in 1913. He became a talented piano player and composed music for the theater. In the 1940s he began to work in Hollywood, California, where he would compose the music scores for sixteen films from 1948 to 1969.

His best known film score is that for the 1958 movie The Big Country, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Original Music Score. According to Moross, he composed the main title after recalling a walk he took in the flat lands around Albuquerque, New Mexico, shortly before he moved to Hollywood in the late 1930s.

His other works include the music for the films When I Grow Up (1951) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1960), The Cardinal (1963), Rachel, Rachel (1968) and The Valley of Gwangi (1969). He also composed the main theme to the 3rd–8th seasons of the television western series Wagon Train, the theme of which was based on his score for The Jayhawkers!.

He also orchestrated for other composers, including such films as Our Town for Aaron Copland and The Best Years of Our Lives for Hugo Friedhofer.

Moross's concert works include a symphony, which was premiered by conductor Sir Thomas Beecham on 18 October 1943 in Seattle, Washington, a sonata for piano duet and string quartet.

Moross died in Miami in 1983 of congestive heart failure following a stroke.

Rachel Cameron (Joanne Woodward) is a shy, 35-year-old spinster schoolteacher living with her widowed mother in an apartment above the funeral home once owned by her father in a small town in Connecticut. School is out for summer vacation and Rachel figures it will just be another lonely and boring summer for her. (Its implied that she may even hate summer as her job provided somewhat of an escape from her rather domineering mother who's always trying to compare her to her sister who married a successful man.) Fellow unmarried teacher and best friend Calla Mackie (Estelle Parsons) persuades her to attend a revival meeting, where a visiting preacher encourages Rachel to express her need for the love of Jesus Christ. Rachel is overwhelmed by God's grace, baring so much pent-up emotion, that she is humbled after the service; comforting her, Calla suddenly begins to kiss Rachel passionately. Is Calla a lesbian, or did she merely react to the emotion of the moment? The film does not answer this question, but Rachel's reaction is to withdraw from the friendship for the time being.

In August 1943, Lt. Commander Ben Staves (Mature), recovering from the sinking of his destroyer in battle and the loss of part of his surviving crew to shark attack, is flown to Project Shark Chaser, a tiny and isolated Naval Research Laboratory post on the Isle of Pines in Cuba. Its rich environment for sharks and indigenous English-speaking population of Caymanero fishermen makes it an ideal testing ground for the development of an effective shark repellent. The small research team has been led during its first ten months of investigation by Lt. Commander Leonard "Len" Evans (Coolidge), an ichthyologist formerly with the Scripps Institution, assisted by a chemist, Ensign "Dunk" Duncan (Olson), and a cameraman, Chief Petty Officer "Gordy" Gordon (Akins). Ben assures Evans that he is there to help him, not take over the project. When Evans tells him they'll get started "first thing in the morning," Ben counters with "Why not now?" and the team heads out into the bay on a small fishing boat crewed by a local Caymanero and his teenage son Carlos (Campos) to test copper acetate as a repellent. Evans advises that the project has already tested over 200 methods, including poisons, repulsive odors, color clouds, and ultrasonics, none of which has a lasting effect in driving away sharks. The test is initially successful until the acetate cloud dissipates after a few minutes.
