John Stewart Detlie (December 23, 1908 – November 30, 2005) was an American motion picture art director/set designer in Hollywood from 1937 thru 1942.
He was the first husband of actress Veronica Lake, although 14 years older than she; they had two children, one of whom died shortly after birth. They divorced in 1943.
Detlie earned degrees in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1941 for Best Art Direction for the film Bitter Sweet.
Detlie went on to serve in the Army in World War II, including directing the camouflage of Boeing Plant 2 in Seattle. He went on to a career in architecture, designing Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Seattle and a number of large churches and parts of downtown Honolulu. He was an accomplished artist in water colors, acrylics and oils .
His brother, Stanley Detlie, was a set designer in the 1930s and 1940s. John Detlie and his second wife, Virginia, lived in La Quinta, California, for 48 years, until his death from lung cancer several weeks before his 97th birthday.

Act I Hattie Maloney owns a night club in the Panama Canal Zone where she also performs. Three sailors from the S. S. Idaho, Skat Briggs, Windy Deegan and Woozy Hoga, ask her to sing at a party they are organizing ("Join It Right Away"). Nick Bullet, Hattie’s fiance, is a wealthy Navy officer. They are about to meet his eight-year-old daughter Geraldine (Jerry), off the boat from Philadelphia. He tells Hattie, "My Mother Would Love You". Hattie, eager to make a good impression on her prospective stepdaughter, spends three weeks' wages on her elaborately frilly outfit. But when she arrives, Jerry makes fun of Hattie's clothing and way of speaking. Feeling that her marriage is off, Hattie gets drunk on rum ("I’ve still Got my Health"). Kitty-Belle, the daughter of Admiral Whitney Randolph, wants to marry Nick, and she schemes to end his romance with Hattie.

Johnny Brett (Fred Astaire) and King Shaw (George Murphy) are a dance team so down on their luck they're working in a dance hall for no money. Meanwhile, Clare Bennett (Eleanor Powell) is a big Broadway star. Owing to a case of mistaken identity, Shaw is offered the chance to be Clare's dancing partner in a new Broadway show, while it was really Johnny's dancing that producer Bob Casey (Frank Morgan) saw and wanted. The partnership breaks up, but Johnny sticks around to help out Shaw, who lets his newfound success go to his head. Clare eventually realizes that Johnny, and not Shaw, is the better dancer, and she falls in love after having lunch with him. When Shaw gets drunk on opening night, Johnny steps in and saves the show with a brilliant performance, though he lets King think he did it himself. Clare later tells Shaw the truth. Just before the next show, Clare discovers Shaw drunk and Johnny becomes the permanent replacement. After the show, they find out that King was pretending to be drunk so that Johnny would get the job.

In this adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's "The Farewell Murder", Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy) Charles are back in New York with Asta and a new arrival - Nicky Jr. They are invited by Colonel Burr MacFay (C. Aubrey Smith) to spend the weekend at his house on Long Island. McFay, the former business partner of Nora's father, and the administrator of her fortune, desperately wants Nick to put his well-known detective skills to work, as he has been receiving threats from Phil Church (Sheldon Leonard), a very shady character. When MacFay is killed, Church seems to be the obvious suspect. However, Nick is skeptical. He suspects there is something far more complicated going on. MacFay's housekeeper, his adopted daughter, and various hangers-on all may have had an interest in seeking the old man's demise.

Malcolm Niles, un écrivain new-yorkais, apprécie une soirée romantique avec l'actrice Vivian Herford, jusqu'à ce que la mère de celle-ci arrive et parle mariage. Malgré ses efforts pour l'éviter, c'est à cause de Nancy qu'il rate une correspondance car il était en train de chercher les gants que la jeune femme avait oubliés. Il la retrouve à la porte de chez lui, car elle a découvert que non seulement George avait disparu mais qu'il n'étais pas comme elle le lui avait dit directeur de magasin. Comme elle n'a nulle part où aller, elle demande à Malcolm de l'aider à retrouver son fiancé. Il est sur le point de la jeter dehors mais, quand Vivian arrive, il lui dit qu'il est avec Nancy. Habitant chez Malcolm, Nancy prend une part de plus en plus importante dans la vie de ce dernier et dans celle de Robert. Malcolm commence à tomber amoureux d'elle, de même que Robert. Il le nie mais quand George réapparaît et réclame Nancy, il se bat avec lui. Malcolm finit par admettre qu'il l'aime et la demande en mariage. Peu après le mariage, Nancy et Malcolm s'embarquent pour l'Europe, mais elle réalise soudain qu'elle a oublié ses gants à terre, Malcolm court pour les retrouver mais ne peut revenir à temps au quai et voit le bateau s'éloigner.
