Joseph M. Newman (August 17, 1909 – January 23, 2006) was an American film director most famous for his 1955 film This Island Earth. His credits include episodes of The Twilight Zone and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.

Après avoir abattu un officier de la Cavalerie par légitime défense pour une histoire de femme, le chasseur Bat Masterson se rend dans la ville de Dodge City où il retrouve son frère Ed, devenu marshall. Avec le soutien de sa fiancée Pauline et de son beau-père, le révérend Howard, Ed présente sa candidature pour le poste de shérif, face au corrompu Jim Regan. Bat décide alors de s'installer dans la ville. Il se lie vite d'amitié avec le docteur Sam Tremain puis s'éprend de la jolie Lily, une veuve qui peine à gérer le Saloon Lady Gay. Pour l'aider à remonter ses finances, Bat devient joueur professionnel, s'associe avec elle et investit une forte somme d'argent. Le succès du Saloon cause des problèmes de jalousie puis, un soir, Ed est tué par Dave Rudabaugh, cousin de l'officier que Bat a jadis abattu. Lassés par la violence perpétrée par les hommes de Regan, les notables de la ville décident de nommer Bat au poste de shérif afin de faire régner la loi.

Allen Bardeman (Robert Douglas) is a prominent, married lawyer who collects money from the numbers racket for the syndicate. His legal secretary, Angela Walsh (Vera Miles), is also his mistress, and he provides her with a house of her own, where Sam Henry (Robert Bailey) – a corrupt New York City administrator who acts as a "bag man" for the syndicate – makes a weekly visit to pick up money from Bardeman. Bardeman 's lavish lifestyle and tax problems have placed him deeply in debt. Angela urges him to solve his money problems by staging a robbery of the syndicate 's money, using a man he knows will do it for him. She then visits Ed Rackin (Ken Lynch), a nightclub owner who looks out for the syndicate 's local interests and who Henry also visits to collect syndicate numbers proceeds. Their conversation reveals that Bardeman is unaware that they know one another, and that Angela is scheming with Rackin to make off with Bardeman 's money after the staged robbery and run off together.

An embittered cavalry sergeant must take over his regiment after their commanding officer is killed during an ambush. Dr. Cal Meacham (Reason), a noted scientist and jet pilot, is sent an unusual substitute for electronic condensers that he ordered. Instead, he receives instructions and parts to build a complex communication device called an interocitor. Although neither Meacham nor his assistant Joe Wilson (Robert Nichols) have heard of such a device, they immediately begin construction. Attractive newlywed Ruth (Stanton) Bowman (Jeanne Crain) joyously starts a honeymoon cruise to Europe with her husband John (Carl Betz), only to have him go missing shortly after they check into their room on board. Compounding her confusion, Ruth finds that she is registered solo under her maiden name in a different cabin and that none of the crew members who could have seen her husband on the ship remember him.
