Kelly Masterson is an American screenwriter, playwright and writer who lives in New Jersey. He wrote the screenplay for the film Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, for which he is perhaps best known. Before moving to New York to stage several of his early plays, he studied Theology at the University of California, Davis. In describing his script for Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, he has said:
"I don't know. It was winter, and I was depressed I guess when I was writing it. I'm fascinated by the folly of human nature. I love characters who we understand and sympathize with, but we just shake our heads at how stupidly they act. This probably comes from my theology background but I love the big themes of good and evil and how we're such a combination of both. We try to chart a path that's on the side of good, but we all have evil impulses in us."
He had tried to get the script made seven years before director Sidney Lumet agreed to direct it.
Masterson's play "Edith" about Woodrow and Edith Wilson premiered at Berkshire Theater Festival in 2012.
Masterson collaborated with Korean Director Bong Joon-ho on Snowpiercer. The film stars Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer and Ed Harris. It will be released in 2013.
Masterson is currently working on a television pilot of USA Network ("The Legend of Jessie and Jack") and a television movie ("Killing Kennedy") slated for November 2013 on National Geographic.
