A group of illegal immigrants are smuggled from China to South Korea inside a shipping container, but when it's opened in the affluent Seoul suburb of Bundang by traffickers, it's discovered that all of the immigrants are dead, except for one man, a carrier of a deadly strain of H5N1 (avian influenza, or bird flu). As the man escapes, he quickly spreads the virus to nearby residents. Mir (Park Min-ha), daughter of a single mother Kim In-hae (Soo Ae), meets the man, named Mossai, and gives him some food and tells him to wait as she calls rescue worker and paramedic Kang Ji-goo (Jang Hyuk). However as he arrives, Mossai is nowhere to be found.

In 1375, a small diplomatic mission from the Korean kingdom Goryeo travels to Ming China to meet the Hongwu Emperor, but they are arrested in retaliation for the death of a Chinese diplomat in Goryeo. They are put in chains and taken across a desert. However, Mongol raiders suddenly show up and kill the Chinese soldiers transporting them, while killing some Koreans in the process. Do-chul is a boxer whose recent string of losses cause him to give up the sport. While visiting a credit bureau on the insistence of the gym owner, he meets Hong-ki who is a habitual swindler constantly scheming while proclaiming he'll own a high-rise building in six years. During his stay at Hong-ki's rented room, he meets Mimi, a would-be actress. Hong-ki tries to seduce Mimi by promising her that he would cast her in a movie. At a party thrown for aspiring actors and actresses, drunken Do-chul creates a scene and gets his head smashed with a beer bottle by Mimi's manager. With this, he ends up in a hospital. Hong-ki runs away with Do-chul's compensation pay, blowing it all on horse race betting. With nowhere else to go, Do-chul stays at his gym.
