Biography

Lionel Lindon débute comme chef opérateur en 1943 et contribue à ce titre à soixante-dix films américains (dont des westerns), les trois derniers sortis en 1969. Parmi les réalisateurs avec lesquels il collabore, citons John Frankenheimer (ex. : Un crime dans la tête en 1962, avec Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey), Edward Ludwig (ex. : Le Trésor des Caraïbes en 1952, avec Arlene Dahl, John Payne), George Marshall (ex. : Le Dahlia bleu en 1946, avec Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake) et Irving Pichel (ex. : A Medal for Benny en 1945, avec Dorothy Lamour et Arturo de Córdova), entre autres.

Il obtient deux nominations à l'Oscar de la meilleure photographie, dont un gagné (voir la rubrique "Nominations et récompense" ci-dessous).

À Washington DC, le capitaine de police Frank Matthews a arrêté le meurtrier et violeur Paul Sanderson. Lors de son procès, son avocat W. W. King plaide le vice de forme, alléguant que son client n'a pas été informé de ses droits constitutionnels et la Cour suprême relaxe Sanderson au grand dam de Frank. Parallèlement, ce dernier soupçonne sa femme Adèle d'avoir une liaison avec un homme marié. Pendant qu'il s'est absenté pour se rendre à un colloque à Baltimore, sa femme en profite pour retrouver son amant Brooks Elliot, un ex-petit ami devenu sénateur. Le couple est abattu alors qu'il se trouvait au lit. Frank est le premier suspecté et, malgré son recours à un avocat, le même avocat qui avait défendu Sanderson, il est appréhendé. Pour lui, la culpabilité de Sanderson ne fait aucun doute. Il réussit à s'échapper et va retrouver Sanderson dans sa résidence en Pennsylvanie. Lors de leur affrontement, il réussit à obtenir ses aveux et au moment où Sanderson s'apprête à le tuer, Madame Sanderson mère l'en empêche. Innocenté et de retour à Washington, Frank doute de ses lendemains dans la police.

A ghostly British naval officer(Niven) persuades four members of the American navy to launch an attack on Japanese positions, hoping to redeem the family honor and his own tattered record from the First World War. The movie is set at St. Francis Academy (also the name of the school in Sister Act 2), a fictional all-girls Catholic boarding school in Pennsylvania, operated by an order of nuns. During the Korean War, the Soviets capture a U.S. platoon and take them to Manchuria in Communist China.
